Burning Rubber

Hey,

well, today I was driving kind of "spirited," and there came a red light. I pop into first, drop the clutch at around 1700 RPMs and floor it (Im a beginner). I get a quick screeching from the front tires at around 3000 RPMs, should this be happening? What am I doing wrong, because basically, I want to get a good start, but not like full on racing style. The main thing is that I DO NOT want to really wwear out my tires, b/c I can't afford new ones at the moment. So just let me know what I should do to get a decent start with no wheel spin i guess, and to keep the tires AOK.

Thanks, Sorry if this is a stupid question

I let the clutch out til it starts to engage, then hit the gas and release the clutch slowly while keeping the revs to about 3500 until the clutch is all the way out, just before the clutch is all the way out I floor it. Sadly before you relize it, your bouncing off the rev limiter at the top of first. Oh well, thats how I do it and it works pretty good for me, I usually let the tires spin just a enough to hear little chirps as the clutch grabs.

lol i just pop the throttle while the clutch is in and it jumps up to 3000 rpms or so then jus dump the clutch until i kno when it's about to engage then i let it out slowly. Or you could just start giving it a little gas while disengaging the clutch a little also.

You should get a little more than a quick screech. I don't get why kids (or their parents) buy these god damn cars (or any car for that matter) and don't know a thing about them. Some of you don't even know how to change the ******* headlights. I am going to petition for a nationwide law that when you go to buy any car you must be able to perform certain maintainence procedures, check wearing parts, and actually drive the vehicle. It pisses me off when stupid questions like this are asked. The moderators really need to do a better job of who they allow on this site and the things they allow to post and where they need to be posted. SERIOUSLY.

Try feathering the clutch A BIT but don't burn the living hell out of it. Once you've started rolling a bit let the **** fly. You'll still get some spin but nowhere near as much as you will from just dumping the clutch. Hell even on my 2.2 if I just dump the clutch I can smoke the hell out of my tires assuming I can avoid the wheel hop.

Forums should be used for SERIOUS technical information or hey look at my pictures of my actually modified vehicle and how it was actually modified. Notice I didn't say stock with some rims and tint and neons. Or for when you seriously break some **** and want to figure out what for real the best part is to replace it with, not just what is available and is cheap. But questions like this and people actually replying to try and help this kid do nothing but waste bandwidth.

Your just about dumb!!!! If everyone knew how to do small maintenance then there would be a lot of ppl without jobs. Did you get that or do i need to explain? And the moderators do a fine job, all though they could make sure ppl like you do not ruin someones day or the thread for that matte. If you want to help the guy out that is fine. Help and stories are the reason for this site so get over yourself.

Have to agree here, the line has got to be drawn somewhere. Granted, we could all learn something here but seriously folks? Does anyone remember this one.

Subject A: I can't seem to get into first gear without forcing it.
Subject B: Really? I don't seem to have a problem so far, how fast were you going?
Subject A: About 40.

WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT !?!?!?

You're right. There would be a lot of people without jobs. I mean, where would all the high school drop outs get to make money? I'm sorry but just about anyone who has more strength than an 80 year old woman can do the job of an ASE mechanic. Really, this stuff isn't hard. Learn a thing or two.

Too much coffee today, or way too long without sex (with a partner that is) ? Give the kid a break ! The question was not asked in a technical section of the board, it's in general.
Granted this was a very basic question that most on here could answer, but it was important to this guy so either answer or ignore it. The moderators seem to do a pretty good job around here but hey let's pick on them too !

There is no such thing as a "stupid question" only stupid answers ! I own a tractor-trailer repair shop, have been in business for over 12 years. I still spend 3-5 hours per week learning about my "trade". I ask a lot of questions. I answer a lot of questions from young guys starting out. They seem to be real basic to me but someone has to answer.
I have learned quite a bit on this site, things that probably seem stupid to you. My lesson on this site today is that when I go to work in the morning and one of the apprentices asks me a question, I will answer it without the joking tone in my voice and remember not to be a pompous ass.

Thanx
S.

I don't drink coffee, I live in the random sex capital of the country, and I like to be a pompous ass. Ouch that hurts.

Dude somethin crawled up your butt. It seems to me that you are the only one that is bothered by this thread so i think that you should lay off. Or instead of making fun of ppl you should teach them how to do these things. Oh and by the way i do all of my own maintenance and you are right it is not hard.

everyone is entitled to their own opinions.. and i repsect his.. but here's my 2 cents.. i don't know if you (or any of you guys) have military experience.. i've been doing this Army thing for over 5 years.. and when you are operating a big machine like the M1 Abram tanks you better know what you are doing if not ask someone.. like what "bogout" said, there is no such thing as a dumb question.. if you don't ask questions from bigs ones like "where is the rally point in case the element gets seperated" or "what time will the exercise begin" to small questions like "is everyone accounted for during a night exercise" or during PCI (Pre-Combat Inspection) asking your subordinates if they have enough water.. it wont hurt you to read these short posts, if you dont like it dont say anything ruck up and drive on.. noone will learn anything if questions aren't asked so ask away.. SOMEONE will answer you

Dude these questions may be stupid to you but pull your head out of your ass for 2 seconds and realize that not everyone here knows everything about cars. I could go into networking so in-depth that your brain would hurt, would you have any idea of what im talking about? no. Theres even kids on here that get a Cobalt as their first car, and you expect them to know everything about it? ITS A FKING $20-30 THOUSAND DOLLAR PIECE OF MACHINERY FFS. Some of us Including me learned to drive manual on this car, and i did it only because i loved the car so much. So to you all these "oh how do i start launching the car threads" may seem stupid, but to so many others they are a very great source of information and THAT is why many people come to this site.

i sort of get his point though...although he takes it overboard.

its just sad when someone gets a "nice" car and doesn't know much about it, let alone, not knowing how to drive it correctly(my pet pieve).

no offense to anyone

O come on. Y'all need to get over yourselves.

I like to think I know a lot about cars, and if any work is done on my car, I DO IT. I own a '63 Chevy Pickup, 3 on the tree, ya, now that is a bicth to drive. I think I drive it well, however, guess what, about a year ago, I couldn't drive a manual. I learned to drive my manual driving my Cobalt SS/SC off the parking lot(I was 16, first car). Give the kid a break.

Ok, I have lots of trouble starting the car off quickly without burning the front tires off.

My solution, just let the clutch out earlier at lower RPMs and then use the gas pedal to control your start. The main problem you have with spinning the tires is when you load up the RPMs and then dump the clutch.

That is my solution, hope it helped. Enjoy your Cobalt SS.

Ok whats your defintion of "actually modifying" your car? I'm curious, tell me what YOU would concider an actual modification. When you seriously break something, what do you concider serious. I'v broken some SERIOUS **** in my truck and I just wanna see you would view as a serious break. Lastly What the hell do you care what people ask on this site! Does someone asking a question that they think is a good question effect your day in any way shape or form? Do you lose sleep over things like this? Lighten UP! ****!
