Business Idea

Ok guys, a few of you have seen me on here before. I am a car designer with GM, I have been doing that for about 10 years now, I was actually the lead designer on the Cobalt SS Coupe.
Well I recently started to do what I call "Concept Illustrations" for some of my family, friends and bosses cars. Essentially they gave me a photo, and I then used that to completely redraw the Car as a Concept Illustration. These images are exactly like the images I produce at work all day. These are not just photochops of a photograph, they are completely illustrated from the ground up. They take me about 10 to 12 hours to do. I've been charging around $350 to do this, and you get a 30 x 15 print to have framed, etc...
Anyway gimme some feedback, do you think this would fly. I looked all over the net to find something similar and I couldn't. I know there are some old timers that do the oil paintings and stuff, but those cost 10's of thousands of dollars. I think my idea might fill and affordable niche, and you'd have a personal one off piece of artwork done by a real car designer. Here are the first few I have done.

Thanks!

Yeah you are probably right, currently I am just looking to see if you guys think people would want to do something like this. Thanks for the heads up though.

Wow, you are very talented... and I really like your idea and definitely think it will fly. Like you said, you did some research, and it looks like you could fill a gap in the market, so good luck to you. I'd get one if I wasn't so tight on cash right now.

btw, that Cobalt looks sick! Love the grill and driving lights.

I am glad you all like them. Yeah my fear is this would be something you don't need, but would be really cool to have. Maybe when the economy gets better, more people would be willing. I think my next step should be to start a website. Anyone know how to do that?

Whats your dad got? Your local so it would be pretty easy to do. I am doing a 58 Vette right now, but if you are serious I am sure I could fit you in.

Thanks, I am flattered that everyone likes this. I haven't done any base cars. But I had the same idea of having a framed pic for car shows, that would be pretty cool.

i would be all over this. do you need a "model" or can you do this based on ideas and certain inspirational photographs of parts?

also, if we were to purchase, could we get digital copies as well?

I do it based on a photograph. Maybe I should post a before and after, I'll do that tonight when I get home. But there is always the possiblity of doing some mods. For example the black SS rendering was what I wanted my 05 to eventually look like. But those design changes get into more time, meaning more money. So say there was a certain CF hood, wheels, etc.. that you liked, or you had a list of parts you wanted to eventually get on your car. I could take your stock photo and then show you what your car would like. Thats the process I go throught to decide what to do to my cars. Thats another direction I have thought about going as well.

I must say you guys are really helping me define this, now I just need to build a website and business model around this. I need to come up with a name for this business too. Throw some ideas out if you have some.
So far I have:
Conzept Illustrations
Conzept Renderz
JT Design
I dunno I suck at coming up with names. LOL

Gotwing, just wondering if you've ever heard of Andrei. He did freelance work for the auto press. Though I've never used his service, but essentially what you are trying to do is what he's been doing. If you can manage to do something like that and undercut him, I can see you might have some leads catering to the press.

PM me if you want his contact and his portfolio.

The SS was different, it's just my intials. The GTO and Merc were done more recenlty, I decided to sign my first name at that point. I was pondering using a pen name, and not my real name. So i guess the cats out of the bag, my name is Josh.

I havent heard of him. I am not sure I want to do that, as it may be a conflict of interest. I don't mind doing peoples personal cars.

that's exactly what i mean! haha, i know what wheels i want, i know what i want the outside of the car to look like, just being 7000 miles away means i can't get pictures that are totally current.
