Exclamation C&D hears this noise, how about you?

Ok, I've read all about the dash rattles here that I'm experiencing as well, sounds like expecting a fix from the dealer is wishfull thinking. However, I've yet to see anyone else complaining about an unusual compressor type noise that seems to emenate from the passenger side air vents.

In my case it sounds like a compressor like the AC, but it is present whether the fan is on or not. Interestingly, it happens whenever the car is in gear, but not when out. It is present whether accelerating or at idle.

I knew this was a recurring problem when I was browsing my old issue of Car and Driver and noticed this:

"All voters remarked on a weird scraping noise that the Cobalt's Ecotec inline-four—and the Saturn's, too—emitted under light load and steady throttle. It sounded like a serpentine belt rasping across a tensioner or like pennies vibrating in the bottom of Uncle Morty's cigar tin."

Check it out here:

Just wondering how many others hear this odd sound and if they've had any luck getting it fixed.

I hear the same thing, almost sounds like a small bell ringing? Dunno what it is, also get a real annoying whining noise from the tranny when on light throttle in 5th gear like 40-50mph, super loud whining noise.

I have one rattle that I have narrowed down to the glove box door. When I hear it if I place my and on the door with light pressure it stops, if I take my hand off it continues. I only notice it when the windows are closed, the HVAC fan is running, and the car is moving.

I have not yet put a whole lot of time into investigating the root cause.

Yeah my glovebox door has the same rattle too. When I get around to it I will try to find a fix for it.

I own an automatic '06 Cobalt LS coupe (Yeah, yeah... don't bust my ***** for not buying manual. Anyone who lives in southern California and knows the 405 freeway knows exactly why I bought automatic). I just purchased this car 2 days ago, and it's got just over 100 miles on it so far. Well, anyway, I immediately noticed two noises:

1. I hear a hiss that sounds like air coming in through the A/C vents. This sound increases in magnitude as acceleration increases.

2. I also hear a loud whine, which seems to be coming from outside the cab, that occurs 1-2 seconds before shifting, at medium to high throttle. This sound does not occur at low or very high throttle.

To tell you the truth, I'm glad others are having what sound like the same problems.

-edit-

Haven't noticed any vibrations yet, though, thankfully.

Yes, I hear it too....thought i installed my B&M shifter incorrectly but no everythings fine. Sounds like air or something but only when it's in gear and you give it gas. With the clutch in ......it dissappears. You have to turn off the air and the radio to hear it.

I hear the same noise from my vent when the blower is working at about half. It's irritating so I turn the stereo up to drown out the sound!

I hear a loud whine....It comes on from 3000rpm all the way to redline. I can't figure out what it is. It's coming from the engine and only makes the noise under WOT. Ever since I added my intake, it got even louder. Anyone know?

The noise you are hearing is your timing chain. You are not going to be able to fix it, because there isn't anything wrong, thats the way the engine is built. Its not a sign of a problem. On the contrary, its a side effect of having an incredibly strong timing arrangment instead of a crappy belt.

The noise occurs in the following ways according to what I have read above;
1. Its on the passenger side
2. Maybe coming from the vents, maybe the glove box
3. Occurs usually under load of acceleration
4. Sounds like pennies rattling in a jar.

Those pennies are the links of your chain meshing the gears. The timing is on the passenger side of the car. The vents and glove box are natural places for the sound to travel through. It's actually one of the biggest reasons that plastic engine cover is on the car, to keep down the timing noise. Try taking it off and driving around some time, you will hear the timing much clearer.

The only noise I notice on my 06 2.4 is under very light throttle, low rpm. Kind of a metal on metal sound. I think this is what Car and Driver is refering to. This noise is barely audible thankfully.

mine sounds like an exhaust leak under light to moderate throttle and it comes from the passenger side floor area, i also had fiberglass all over the back of my car at one point.

i'd like to meet up with someone from my area with an SS S/C and see if theirs does it too
