Maybe its the A/C clutch??? Do you even know if the compressor is engaging?

Does it not work at all, or does it cycle? That will help determine the root cause...if it cycles, check the radiator fan. My girlfriend has a '97 Cavalier, and the fan doesn't work. Takes a long time for the engine to heat up while at a light, but the a/c overheats in a matter of seconds and starts cycling on and off.

If it doesn't work at all, check the relay as well, and the compressor, and the entire system for leaks. Buddy of mine just had an issue where a valve was missing an o-ring and caused the system to leak and lose all cold air. Took 5 minutes for the a/c guy to find and fix it.

i was thinking that but wasn't sure how it works. however, when i switch it to a/c the engine does bog a little you can tell there's a load on it.

Sounds like to clutch is working, but to be sure, find the compressor under the hood, turn on the A/C, look and listen to the compressor to make sure its turning.

If it is spining, 1 possible cause down...
