Really though, anyone with a mechanical background should be able to make any car last half a million miles easy (given that it is not abused or modded). These reviews talking about which cars are more reliable are more of a reflection of how well the group of people who drives those cars take care of them or do their own work. They basically have nothing to do with how reliable the car actually is. In the end, they are all pretty much the same.

The life of a car is 95% dependent upon it's owner, not the manufacturer.
It sounds like you only count something as a problem if it keeps the car from running entirely. Most people would see replacing those parts before 75k miles as problems. Most reported repairs involve parts that cannot be serviced. Things like window regulators. Not "serious problems," mind you, but many people these days don't want to have to go to the shop for anything.

This said, if all you care about is whether the car keeps running, and you are willing to promptly replace anything that shows signs of wear, then you will get many miles out of a car. So I certainly agree with you on that.

There weren't enough responses for the 2005 this time. If owners don't help provide the data, we can't provide a stat. (No one hates when this happens more than I do.)

Not necessarily. Like other reliability surveys, we don't count preventive recalls. So a recall will only have an impact if the owner was already aware of a problem with their own car, e.g. the ignition had shut off on its own, the steering assist had failed, etc.

Turned another way, manufacturers can actually improve the reliability stats for a car by preventively replacing parts they learn are likely to fail, before anything is obviously wrong with them. So recalls can potentially have a positive impact on the stats. I'm okay with this

Oct 2010 - Present

Shop Work
- Had flex pipe blow. Covered under warranty.
- New Muffler.
- Ignition Recall

DIY Maintenance
- Oil Changes.
- Brake jobs.
- Spark plugs
- CAI filter cleanings/changes
- Soak the crap out of everything underneath with WD-40 twice a year

So far been pretty lucky with this thing (KNOCK ON WOOD). Part of the reason I haven't modded to heavily is because of how reliable this thing has been, and as a DD, I dont want to mess with that. Once the second car comes, this thing can become more of a toy .

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2009 Cobalt: 14, low, small sample size
2008 Cobalt: 38, low, small sample size
2007 Cobalt: 26, low, small sample size
2006 Cobalt: 47, low, very small sample size

Additional participants very much needed, as more current members have been selling these than buying them. (I'd love to get ride of those disclaimers.)

Most of the repairs you list seem minor. Then there's "motor went."

I owned an 06 ss/sc for 6 years before selling it and buying my 09 ss/tc. The list os as follows.

06 ss/sc:
3 clutches
3 wheel bearings ( 2 front 1 rear )
Cab
4 end links ( 2 sets )
Heater blower motor
Driver side door lock actuater
Driver side door hinges ( bent and sagging)
Hvac controls
1 rear caliper
Trasdmission reverse switch
Crank position sensor
Rear coil springs ( broke at bottom)
Super charger coupler ( noisey )
Heat exchanger pump
Battery
Intermediate steering shaft
One coil pack

Thats it i think for my 06. Like i said i owned it for 6 years and put 180 thousand km on it .

09 ss/tc ( Current ) have had it for 3 and a half years. :

One end link ( drivers side )
Intake manifold purge solinoid

Thats it... My 09 has been rock solid. And has been a MUCH better car then my 06 was. ( nock on wood ) my 09 tc after 3 and a half years only has 90 thousnad km . i drive a lot less now a days.

Your 2009 does seem much better.

Updated stats soon. More members have been selling than buying Cobalts, so we very much need more participants to keep offering these stats.

If you're reading this but haven't been participating, I hope you'll consider it.
