I don't pay attention to those because the authors tend to prefer jap cars over American cars because they are "superior". Also they don't explain were and how they come up with these figures.

I totally agree, where are they getting that $31,000 ownership cost from anyway? Just thought it was an interesting article

I agree with everyone else. I want to know where they're getting their figures from. Define "long-term" and what that $32,000 is going to be spent on. I have some pretty grand plans for my car, but I STILL don't expect it to cost anywhere near $32,000.

so, according to them, its cheaper to buy 2 cobalts over a 5 year period than it is to just maintain one of them....
interesting

Exactly. 2 brand new cobalts at that. If that were the case then people would be getting new cars every 5 years instead of taking care of the one they have.

I assume the majority of that cost difference is resale value. People see Honda or Toyota and it becomes a magical car which will run for infinity miles with absolutely no repairs or maintenance.

They do throw in depreciation i which case the cobalt would be more expensive because we all know used cobalts are dirt cheap where as civics retain their value. But your not actually spending more money for depreciation your just losing the initial value of the car. Either way this article sounds like a bunch of biased B.S.

i want to know who comes up with these numbers. and why do they throw in depreciation when you plan to keep the car for the long run??? and i like how they compare the cobalt to the civic hybrid, of coarse cost of ownership in 5 years is going to be cheaper, its a hybrid, it should get much better fuel economy. however, in the 10 year range its going to cost far more than a cobalt, those batteries arent cheap.

I've never had a single issue with mine. I'll turn 50,000 miles on it this week (bought it new) and I've never even had to replace a bulb haha. *knock on wood* the car has been unbelievably great since I brought her home.

i just thought about it, all the cars listed there have a 5/100km (5/60k) or better powertrain warrenty. so it really doesnt add up

base cobalt at national average- $15,042
average used price for an 05 - $8,000 (im looking in seatle craigslist)
depreciation- $7,042
cost of base cobalt and depriciation- $22,084
their estimated ownership cost- $31,916
ownership cost minus cost of car and depriciation- $9,832

so being the car has a powertain warrenty for the entire ownership period (5 years) they are trying to tell us maitnance costs $9,832??? lets see, in 60k miles the car should only use one set of front breakes (pads, rotors), no rear brakes, a set of tires, oil changes, one air filter and a cabin filter. the coolant should be changed at the 5 year mark regardless of mileage.

who dreams up this ****???

I wrote yahoo an e-mail...

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Five-o...25828.html?x=0

This article is possibly the worst written article I have ever read. You talk about the "long term cost" of the vehicle.. But no where do you say what this includes. You favor foreign cars as well. Get your ******* heads out of you asses and write an article that supports our economy or back the article with substantial proof. Yahoo.... You suck.

My dad beats his Cobalt LS by putting on about 25,000-30,000 miles a year that includes winter driving. He bought it with 16 miles and it now has over 70,000 and I know he has yet spend even $1,000 in repairs.

+1.

I stopped paying attention to articles like this and especially CR since the bias is obvious.

Either that or I have been very lucky and gotten the one good vehicle that Detroit made that year when I've bought a car.....and that includes the 2 late 70's/used Impalas I've owned.

Yeah I found that funny, too.

2005 Honda Civic Hybrid Sedan:
New MSRP: $19,900 (According to AOL Autos)
Private Party Value (PPV): $10,500 (According to Edmunds.com)
Depreciation: $9,400

2005 Chevy Cobalt LS:
New MSRP: $13,625
PPV: $6,500
Depreciation: $7,125

I mean, everything else being equal (and I don't see how the price of an oil change or a brake job or tires would be different between the two...) the Cobalt should come out to be cheaper to own based on those numbers. What are the intangibles here? 2005's claimed MPG's are off, actual MPG's are most likely similar.

The PPV of the Civic vs MSRP is 53%, where as the Cobalt is only 47%... So your used Civic is worth a greater percentage compared to new than your used Cobalt is...

lol I have had a number of problems with my car, but it also was an 05' ls that was a lemon, but they paid for everything to be fixed in 05' since then I have had an axle, trans, clutch, and tires had to be replaced. I also replaced head gasket, head studs, and valves. All by choice either cause I chose to break racing, or just cause of a pothole. I will accept responsibilty for all of these things cause they were my fault but that's what happens when you boost a non boosted car. With that said I haven't even hit 2000.00 in repairs + upgrades combine lol this is a horrible article.
