If he knew how to drive a stick properly he'd be faster I can't stand auto's cuz they're slow at take off and no fun to drive.

the fastest transmission in the world is actually an automatic on one of the new BMW's...with technology today many automatics can....how shall i say.."outshift" a human. the GTO is also faster as an automatic.......i also got the 'balt in an automatic b/c i don't get as much enjoyment out of "banging gears" in a 4 cyl. as i do in the goat

Still think that SRT-4 guy could have done better with his stick.
Anyhow, just stating my opinion that I share with many about sports cars being best driven stick. Call me old-school (lol!)

oh definitely.....i guess it's the whole issue of being able to have total control. even with the paddle shifters, if you don't shift when the car wants to, it's going to do it anyway. stick will always be more fun...

Nothing, but the majority of girls who are driving around in automatics are doing so because they simply aren't willing to learn how to drive a stick shift and are, how to put this, proud of that. When they do that it just plays into the stereotype that girls can't drive performance cars. I get comments from girls that make me want to slap them for making the rest of us look like idiots. Comments such as "OMG, what do you do when you wear heels?" or "How can you drive a stick? I could never do it because then how would I be able to drive and talk on the phone."

Just bugs me I guess when girls you the fact that they're female to explain why they can't (or really won't) do things.

Autos can be built to be faster than a standard shift, but typically not from the factory.

I hate seeing people drive and talk on the phone, I hope they get pulled over 7 times a day. It's almost as annoying as people stopping at yeilds when no one is coming.

Exactly....we have the technology to make a trans that shifts faster than a human ever could. BMW with the SMG is a good example and an even faster transmision is the dual clutched Direct Shift Gearbox by VW-Audi Group which is layed out like a manual transmission but with 2 clutches and input shafts. Even gears on one shaft and clutch / odd gears on another. When you start out in 1st gear the odd clutch is engaged and the even clutch is disengaged with 2nd gear ready to go. click the paddle and the odd clutch disengages and preselects thrid gear while the even clutch engauges with second gear.

This way the actual gear change is just a split second and the next gear is ready to go right away.

Darn Germans always have the cool ideas....complicated..but cool
