Cobalt and mild mods

OK I'm looking at getting a new car and want to weigh my options.

I have already looked at a new GTI and like that I can chip it and have 250hp and 300tq.

Can teh Cobalt SS SC compair to this? or is there anythgin that makes it stand out form the GTI?

but thats still not near the same power levels, and costs $250 more then the chip.

Are cobalts just a car you you NEED to sink money into to get good levels from?

The numbers for the chip are a bit inflated.

Also, what will the chip do for your warranty?

Well first of all, you wont own a Volkswagon which already makes you better. You`ll actually own a nice car, instead of a granny mobile. Plus you wont get all the complications that come with a damn German car. Plus the parts that will come for the Cobalt will definately blow the GTI in the near future.

sounds like you made your decision to get a GTI. So... why are you on this forum ?

also arent GTI's quite a bit more expensive?

Also, a chip WONT give you those numbers, i dont care how many fan boys tell you that

Yeah, it really sounds like you've made your mind up. I was also in the market for a GTI prior to getting my SS/SC. However, the GTI is a lot more expensive and not as quick. It is a nicer car from an interior perspective. I wanted the SS/SC though, it is more of a "hot-rod". I wanted mods with warrenty and I'll be getting stage II in the near future. Chip for a GTI = kill your warrenty and pay $$$$$$ for German parts. Both are nice cars though, goodluck with your decision. I think we had a race on this site sometime...a stock SS/SC vs a chipped new GTI and it was essentially even......

The GTI is insanely expensive. My coworker bought hers last January and my god she is paying $410/mo. the total cost after taxes for it was somewhere near $30k. Now the cobalt, which is 2/3rds the price, and nearly the same output stock as the GTI is a much better car IMHO. Plus for the cost of the Stage 2, an intake, and an exhaust you can be putting out what is likely to be more power than the GTI will with a chip. So in reality you're still saving a lot of money by buying the cobalt. Plus replacements parts for a VW are insanely expensive.

Go drive both and see what you like more. Don't listen to the fanboys here or the fanboys there and decide for yourself. Look around at what's offered for each car and make your choice from there. Maybe make out some note cards of the pros and cons of each test drive and so on.

It sounds like to me you have your heart set on the GTi but have come here either hoping we will tell you "yeah get it our car sucks" or something like that. The only assurance you need is your own. If your worried about your image with the tuner crowd then you should probably go with the VW. No American car will ever get the respect it deserves from those people.

We like our cars, the mod well, GM makes parts that are warranted, and the cars are inexpensive really. It all comes down to personal preference. Good luck to you and I hope you choose the car you want and not the car someone else wants you to choose. NOW GO GET TO TEST DRIVING!!

EDIT: Also keep in mind hp/tq figures are just figures. What happens in the real world is what matters. In my opinion the butt dyno is the most important dyno test.

thats what i was thinking.... gtis arent 30k your coworker just got ripped. and how much soembody pays a month isnt going to help anyone, esp since it could be for 2 years or 6 years. you dont know what kinda apr they had to swallow or if they put anything down. if you buy a car without a down payment you are a tool. we are going to put 8000 down on the xterra we are going to buy. we could afford to pay it without the money down but why. thats less every month outta our pocket

When I bought my SS/SC I looked/test drove at the SRT4, GTI, RSX-S, SI, and SS/SC. IMO I liked the SS/SC better. Looks, AMERICAN MADE, no lag, interior looks etc. I just liked it over all better than the others. Plus my dealership hooked me up...ALOT!! So that had a factor in it too.

PLUS NOW 0% ;-)

My roomate owns a 05 GTI, my car does not embarass it. Its a close matchup. It gets me off the line but then I can play catch up and pass. Ya there's no way you're getting that much torque from a chip lol

Nissan is a japanese company.... yet their vehicles are made in Mexico... but hey i guess cause they bear a japanese logo their quality is better

look, buddy, you're clearly on the wrong forum. you basically came on here with the mindset "I want a GTi, i want to hear people who drive a cobalt ss/sc convince me i dont want their car"

well, as said above, its biased here. Thats like me going to hondahookup and telling them to convince me to buy a mustang.

Well horsepower and torque really dont mean a lot. Its just a number.... Look @ the Lotus Elise.... 180 hp and 138 ft lbs.... that thing is a rocket. It beat a Ferrari Enzo on a real racetrack. I assumed there werent a lot of big straight aways... But I have been in a Cobalt SS and a GTI, the Cobalt was a lot funner and u get more looks in an SS

I agree with him

No i came here we/ the attitude, I'm looking for an FI car, and I wanna know how the Cobalt stacks up, I'll be doing a similar thread on a SRT-4 Forum later tonight.

I just wanted to know how a Cobalt would do against a Chiped GTI, if the Cobalt had the same near stock potential, and apparently it doesnt so it's not the car for me.

And for the record I have seen a 2.0T GTI put down 247whp/287wtq with chip, catback and highflow cat on a Mustang dyno.....so yes a chip CAN pull alot out of the cars GTI.

Okay, thats not the same as a stock GTI with a chip.

If that is the case, what did the power curve look like? Its not about the top number on the dyno, its about the entire curve.
