I would read as many professional reviews as you can on both cars. Most people on here will tell you to do with a Cobalt because it's a Cobalt forum

I was also considering a WRX but I went with the Cobalt SS mostly because it was cheaper and I liked the styling much better. It all depends on what you like. To me, the WRX is a more rugged, and the Cobalt is more refined as far as looks go. The power numbers are smiliar, so you should test drive both and see which you like better.

WRX - 227hp
Cobalt SS - 205hp, which is underated from the factory and has been dyno proven to produce 210+ hp stock. With a simple K&N drop in you will see numbers in the 220's.

One piece of information that might help is what model of the WRX you are looking at, and compare the standard features of the two and ignore the sheer horsepower and torque numbers . Other than that I'd recommend you take both out for a test drive and take them down similar routes and perform the same trials with each and see which meets your expectations...not to mention which fits your style (rugged vs sleek).

unless u plan to do some offroading or rallying, i would go with the cobalt. The ss is definitly faster and nicer. i test drove a new 2.5 rs and if the wrx is anything like it, whooo- it feels like a truck(IMO) havent been able to test an ss, but i'm sure it feels like a sports car.
i'm pretty sure repair costs will be higher is a wrx, not to mention fuel milage on an awd. i'd say if ur going awd, go to the max and get an sti, and rally that bitch. nothing cooler than a powerslide on gravel!

You should check out the saab 92 if you are thinking WRX. Same car, the GM employee discount really drops the price on this car.

IMO

I love the cobalt to death, Ive been waiting for the SS to come out since GM annouced the death of the cavi. BUT if it were my choice, the cobalt cant touch the wrx. Before flaming me listen to my reason.

Now if you just plan on keeping it stock for stock on both cars, the wrx has the advantage of being an AWD tried and tested 4 door turbo'd monster.

The biggest disadvantage as I see it for the cobalt is its FWD platform. No one has really modified their cars yet so grip hasnt been that big of a problem yet, but like the SRT-4 its most likely going to happen. Where in with the WRX you could drop the cluth at 7grand and still catch traction after a minor tire slip.

The potential of SS is a unknown right now, even with pullys to up boost, your going to reach the chargers limit soon. I really couldnt see pushing 300+ hp/tq with the stock blower and internals. The wrx gives you almost infinate possibilitys because of the simple fact its turbo charged insted of super charged.

The cobalt SS has price going for it, its an awesome bang for the buck. But remember its in its first year run, changes are coming problems will be fixed.

Now Ive driven both, owned and show room. The cobalt is a quick little car, power on tap, but the wrx fells alot more stable to me.

Either way I think youll be satisfied with what ever car you go with.

You are pretty much on target Kagekun, the SC's limits are near. The internals on the SS are not the problem though, it's the small Eaton m62. If you were to put on a larger blower and a smaller pulley you could have better capasity and it would be more upgradeable. However, the downside is it will take more power to crank a larger blower, and more boost will require you to retard more timing which will result in a loss of hp. You could avoid retarding the timing by upgrading the intercooler and or running higher octane fuel.

The WRX is more upgradeable, but the Cobalt is cheaper and almost as fast. In drag racing, AWD is great for launching, but in the long run, it makes the car slower because it must distribute the power to 4 wheels at once which gives each wheel half the power the Cobalt would have in just one.

Cool

kagekun thanks! that was a reallly good way too look at it! see i like how the ss looks an the interior is very nice but like you said the wrx is more upgradable and thats where im stuck not to mention that the wrx is awd! i mean money is not really an issue but i do like only having to pay 20,000 as for paying 24,000. the other thing for the ss is that it is american! so it more or less comes down to do i want more upgradeable and awd or do i want better looking interior and exterior and american! and for a sec i considered a srt-4 but then i realized what i was thinking and that went away real fast! its not that i hate that car i just hate dodge cause of tranny prbs! on past products so its hard to decide! cause 2 friends have wrxes and they have never had any prbs with bigger tubos (vf-34) and down pipes ecu and so on etc.. it would be kind of easy to work on cause i know about them pretty well! and they are a blast to drive! i just wish i could buy both damn it!!!??

Thats a definate downfall, the wrx/sti has the worst interior Ive seen in a "sporty" car. I feel in love with the interior of the SS. My biggest complaint about the SS from the get go was its supercharged instead of turbo'd. Personally, between the two I think the WRX would have a easier path to upgrade then the cobalt. Cobra's love upgrades, but then those are V8's that respond very well to bolt on's.

I really wouldnt mind upgrading to a bigger blower but traction keeps nagging at me. One would think that even from a roll the tires would break lose with a bit more boost then stock, altho 18' wides could help that.

To compare the SS to the WRX/9-2x aero:

WRX/9-2:
-like the wagon, much more utilitarian and would accomodate roof racking items (I kayak).
-There's also the fact that it's turbo and not sc like the SS.
-For northies there's the AWD factor.
-strong car structurally, not so much interior wise (seen the interiors fall apart on suby models)
-great incentives on 9-2x right now, larger profit margin so w/ GMS is almost same as an SS.
-not good mileage, from watching the boards and knowing a couple people with them, they get mid-to-high-teens for mileage (14-19).

SS:
-decent mileage...I get 24mpg on my work cycle (incl town driving), low speed highways get mid 30's and freeways get mid/high 20's.
-better interior quality than WRX, but from what I can tell with my limited time in a 9-2 it's they are about same....that's not saying a whole lot tho.
-small opening but decent size interior of the trunk, but other than that not nearly as utilitarian as the other cars
-ok for 2 people but would be a pain if hauling 3 or 4 people regularly
-great stock stereo and sub is matched and out of the way

I had GM Card points to use toward the purchase, but couldn't use them on Saab, otherwise I'd be driving a 9-2x right now. I wanted to use on a gmc truck but they cost so dang much I decided to go with the SS and get a beater truck later if I need to (since right now I use a friend's truck when the need arises).
I'm really happy with the SS, it was great value, good quality, fun to drive, better stock stereo than the others and good mileage if you keep RPMs down.
If overall price and value matters, go with the SS. If utility matters most or you are in a remote area where roads get bad or in a high snowfall area go with one of the others. That's my 2 cents, hope it helped.

If you are still willing to spend 20k, I would suggest a used 2001 Audi S4. Can't go wrong with it

250hp AWD 2.7L Bi-turbo.

0-60: 5 seconds
1/4: 13.6

WRX for sure by my opinion. IMO, the Cobalt looks cheap & chunky, so the WRX wins that one hands down. AWD is your friend! And the import vs. American car, i'm not sure where the WRX is built, but my Subaru was built in Indiana. The Subaru has a proven longevity whereas GM cars are known for problems. I'd stick with what's proven if it was up to me

Tech. Subaru is still an import even though they have factories in the US. Chevi does make some good trannys and engines though. If this were a question about a dodge or ford then it would be differant.

Have you seen a Cobalt in person?, have you ridden in one? I don't think that's a fair assessment if you have never actually been up close to one.
