At my GM dealership when i came for a new tire ( caught a flat) she asked me what kind of car i had. Once i said a cobalt she was like O engine go out? Im like NO lOL i was like why do you say that? She said they have alot of problems with cobalts coming through here. Im thinking like damn, im lucky then cause i drive my car like a bat out of hell and havent had so much as a stall since i got it.

All the cars that Consumer Reports rates high as new cars are imports. They are paid by The Import Builders Association. The used ones, however, Get rated higher.

Consumer Reports sucks at rating vehicles. You can't review a car the same way you rate a refrigerator, and thats effectively what they do. Their reliability ratings are completely flawed (as was mentioned, the Cobalt is rated poorly even though its only a 1st year vehicle) and don't take into account proper maintenance or care.
Anyone who flips through their mag can immediatey see that they are a bunch of Import fanboys. There "best vehicles" lists are practically all imports, and anytime they do a comparo, the import always wins. I'm so sick of their bullshit that I don't even bother reading their magazone anymore.
Heres an article by an editor at allpar.com, it partly explains why CR's auto ratings are so biased: http://www.allpar.com/cr.html

Cobalt reliblity seems to be completely sporadic and seems mainly to be with the first batch of 2005's . My SS built 5/05 hasnt given me one issue yet , other than a couple cosmetic issues with the door panels replaced under warranty . Ive beat the absolute crap outa my SS for the past 4 months and 12,800 miles , and have drag raced it several times at the strip and countless powershifts later , its still chugging right along like the day I got it .

i drove a LX civic 4dr special edition , it was a 05 rental had less than 200 miles on it
it was the worste car ive ever driven , i has seriously considering filing a medical suit against honda for the seats in it , after taking a round trip to cali (1000 miles) i was in serious pain for a week
and some chicks at san diego airport left their civic , same model running and walked 75 feet away from the car and werent watching , i wouldnt even have thought about stealing it , because the seats are that freakin uncomfy
ive driven 30 year old = cars with seats that were alot more comfy
ill stick with GM , atleast their seats are comfy

Cobalts are selling like crazy, they just seem to fly off the parking lot. So far the biggest complaint is the sun roof switch falling out, and some water leaks in the trunk area.
The cobalt just reeks of honda/japanese quality It's the best new gm car in a long time. I know gm since I have fixed their mistakes everyday for 27 years, but I'm not giving up MY '94 civic Vtec just yet.

we have an 04 Malibu Classic here as a GSA fleet vehicle. To say that this car gets the snot beat out of it is an understatement. Despite that, after 35,700 miles of abuse in a little over a year, the engine still runs like new (even if it is noisy) and still pulls with purpose even if it is sadled with an automatic.
I think that the Ecotec is a beast...

I work at a large Chevy dealership and see all the vehicles that come in (service tech for 18 years).
So far ive seen 1 SS/SC with a smoked clutch. We replaced it and it lasted 500 miles and smoked again. Found out the 18 year old kid was learning on it and would hold his
foot on the clutch pedal at all times.
Other than a few water leaks from the a/c and minor sunroof issues ive seen no problems.
We also service 2 rental car and fleet companies that have cavaliers, cobalts, malibu's
that have eco tecs - very few problems so far.
We had 1 cavalier rental car that the customer swamped it, water entered the air intake,
hydrolocked and kicked a rod. I took the old engine and disassembled it <just for the hell of it> and was amazed at the quality of the machining. The timing chain, cams, balancers and
water pump are a work of art! haha

My car was built in 5/05, and haven't had problems either. There are two others on this site who also have some production timess, and also have no problems. i guess May was a good month for cobalt's

One american car on the most reliable list. This is the most biased magazine there is, lol. Not that I have anything against imports but come on.. They act like they're 1000 times better than every domestic car. The Matrix and the Vibe are the same car, why can't they put them both on there?

i have had my cobalt for a few months and have put on over 13,000 miles and no problems to date and i beat my cars up........it even made it through one accident and is back to new......it is far superior to the 2003 malibu that i had.....it is a joy to drive and is completely reliable and i think that if people properly maintain their cobalt, it will run fine.
