couldn't do it
couldn't do it
went to dodge to order an srt-4 cos im impatient and didnt want to wait for the SS.. but i just couldn't do it.. a black SS kept going through my head. but the fact that a srt-4 can walk on a SS was bothering me as well..please guys, tell me some comforting things about the SS that will keep me away from those damn neons .. lol
Just look at this..... the cobalt is rated at 205hp by Chevy, reality its about 225-240 hp. The srt is 215 stock (with a turbo). The cobalt SS/sc will have a specific designed trany. One thing I have yet to see iis any comments on the stance in terms of width. The Srt is 57.7 in wide at the stance with a height of 56.5 in, and the Cobalt is 58.7 in stance with a height of 55.5 in. This give the Cobalt a lower center of gravity (just off the top, not including engine location and wieght distribution). One other thing I notice as a difference it the turing radius, Srt - 41 foot and the Cobalt is 33.5 foot.
all very true
plus twincharging looks extremely appetizing.. i guess its just the fact that srt-4s have a extremely large aftermarket line, which i hope the cobalt will have the same once its out for 2 years as well...

as for the cobalt
i think its unfair to give up now on the cobalt. i mean from what we are hearing, its going to be out this month or the next.
I would wait on your purchase just a little longer and see how things are with the cobalt. I say this cause im in the exact same boat as you are
however, i HATE the looks of the SRT-4 but the HP numbers and price make it very tempting
but im going to stick it out and see the cobalt before making a decision.. you might regret buying the SRT before driving the cobalt
Rob, a recent review in some car mag (i cannot remember which...possibly R&T?) did a comparo between the Ion RL vs. SRT 4.
0-60 was faster in the SRT by .3 seconds and the only complaint about the Ion RL was the lack of an LSD to help lay down some of the power was missed.
The review went on to say that although they like the raw power of the SRT-4, the RL's handling was amazing and if it only had the LSD it would have basically won.
There are many reasons to get a Cobalt SS over the SRT-4, but this can be argued either way. The best advice I can give you is this:
$20k is a lot of money no matter what, wait a month or 2 so that you can try out the SS and never have any regrets on your purchase.
P.S. GET A SS!

srt-4 doesnt mean anything the only thing I think of when some one says srt-4 is a NEON 'cuz that's all it is a neon, yeah it maybe powerfull and all but if what the other forum is saying about stage 1 and stage 2 the cobalt is your best bet, and with a possible twin charger you can't go wrong......stay clear of the neon!
hate to hear it, u can always stay around a hang out though...
remember yall, while it might be a dodge, you shouldnt hate them, we need to team up against the imports to help domestics reign supreme again [/steps off mountain...]

well, as long as they dont let rental companies rent out the SS's, then u have nothing to worry about on the resale value. but then again, im sure that they are gonna let the sedan and coupe see fleet and rental days...it still should be significantly higher than the neon though based on the fact that its a new car, and the great reviews that its been getting...

I must admit, it'd be REALLY enjoyable beating a Cobalt SS in a Civic.
Of course, that won't happen stock for stock.

Damn, you guys teaming up against "us"?
I really hope the 2006 Civic is close enough to the RSX-S so I can slap a turbo in there early on. Or go naturally aspirated?

rob,
although the wait is painful, trust me i know, dodge srt-4 is not the way to go. i sold my 01 victory red j-auto body cavy back in october and have been driving my moms toyota rav 4 ever since. you have to look at the cobalt for more than its horsepower. first of all its a chevy. thats #1, diamler-chrysler has not been reputable for quality products or for cars that hold thier resale value in a long time, where gm is #1 in customer retention because (a) thier cars last and are dependable (b) when they go to sell them they usually come back to gm because the line "fits" and gm can offer them incentive to return. the cobalts final drive ratio of 4.05 will def. make up for cobalts lack of 10-15hp under the srt4. hang in there man and keep that beautiful black ss s/c in your head. think of turning up the mp3 player as you shift into 5th gear and look into your rearview mirror, check out your ss embroidered leather seats and peer past that hot spoiler and notice the civics and neons your passing.
hehehe

what minor mods do you think it would take to bump hp to 230 at the wheels? i dont think a intanke and exhaust will cut it.. what do you guys think? pulleys are gonna be a must i know this.. higher boost hopefully means just that and not heat with the roots blower
230hp
rob,
i think maybe headers, mandarin bent exhaust system (full cat-back) and AEM or Injen cold air should boost about 20-25hp...then think about a more powerful alternator and pulleys and cams. all of these things should get you riding out at a little over 230HP to the wheels. Weight reduction is a big thing if you are racing the 1/4 mile (try pulling out the spare tire to save .1 or so off your time), it may not seem like much, but everything helps
