For any of you GM techs, what is the average price of a dealer oil change on a 2.2 cobalt? I've been meaning to do a change myself and switch to synthetic oil, but I don't have a heated garage so I'm going to wait until spring/summer for that. I would take the car to meineke or jiffy lube, but after all the fraud stories I've heard I don't want to take a chance there. What should the dealer change run me?

 

i got quoted $50 plus tax for pure synthetic, but then told me $83 with tax when it was done and ready to pay, plus they didnt reset my oil life thing

so i went to walmart and paid $40 for the same service with half the wait.

 

dealer is rediculous... go to jiffy lube, and watch them drain the oil and put the new oil in... problem solved

 

dealer quoted me 80 for pure synthetic...but they didnt check the tire pressure after they were done so i called them and acted pissed....they gave me a free synthetic oil change for that.....

 

Just get an oil drain pan and do it yourself, so if anything is wrong, you know who to blame.

 

so...im a lil overdue for a change too....is 3600 miles enough break in time to switch to synth?

 

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?! Wow that's crazy.. $80 for an oil change. Nevermind then I'm going to either do it myself or go to the $19.99 place down the street and just ask to watch them do it. I still can't believe they charge that much for oil, what do they do bill it as an hour of labor?

 

dude it was in the 70's this weekend... just change your own oil, will be half price... if you use regular oil it will be about 15 dollars

 

I got mine changed for $55 even at my dealership. I got mobil 1 synthetic. Now I just change it myself and it cost me around $45 for oil and a filter.

 

not rediculous.

check the price of Mobil 1 Oil next time your out shopping.


oh and i would be very worried if anyone gave you an oilchange drastically lower than the dealership, because the reason it would be that much cheaper is because they arent matching the oil that came out of your car.

but if your happy to run quaker state deepfryer blend in your car and save a few bucks....i guess thats your choice.

 

I just spent 40 bucks to day and changed my oil. I dont run any thing but mobil 1 Ive noticed a big differnce in performance between the dealer regular oil and mobil 1 full syn.

Change it your self not hard easyest thing you can do.

what dealer puts anything but mobil 1 in a GM car with "mobil 1" written right on the oilcap?

 

21.95 for Tier 1 which is basic, no additivies

24.95 for Tier 2 which is oil and oil additive which "increases" the oil change time to 5K miles

29.95 for Tier 3 which is oil, oil and gas additive.

Synthetic runs around 94 dollars however.

I have an LT 2.2 they only require regular oil.

 

yeah, the dealer deff runs mobile 1......and for 80 bucks..THEY HAD BETTER!!!

 

the 2.2 does not have mobil 1 written on it...

 

my bad guys, I was under the impression that all cobalts used Mobil 1.

You can always upgrade your oil. No matter the mileage. It's when you downgrade oil that stuff starts to go wrong. As a rule of thumb, I heard to always upgrade and never the opposite.

I'd use Mobil 1 on any car and DIY. You'll save a sh*tload by doing it on your own.

 

They usually suggest not to switch until 3K. But its kind of stupid being that a lot of engines come with synthetic to begin with.

I switched at 3K to mobil1 and you can definetly tell a difference.

 

Definelty. I've found best place to buy your Mobil1 is Walmart. The jugs of it are like 20 bucks, then throw in a good filter around 7. Right theres 27 dollars for an oil change compared to 80 an up.

I had the oil changed last weekend at the dealer. It cost me 19.95 plus tax, they checked all the fluids and top them off. Checked tire pressure too!
