Differenc between sport and ss?
I bought an 08 sport since buying an SS would kill me in terms of insurance. Im beyond happy with my sunroof and heated leather seats. But i have been reading lately that Chevy didnt make an SS in 08. Why is that? For a sport, it has a better engine as opposed to an ls/lt but no supercharger like in the SS. Can someone fill me in as to why Chevy made the sport? I just want to know the history of my little 4 banger.
no he means from the 05-07 NA SS...
bob lutz made sure in 08 that all the SS badged cars actually meant that. the cobalt SS NA 2.4l honestly was not a SS model. I'm glad they changed it to sport as it really wasnt a super sport. So yes your cars history was a SS model from 05-07.

Sweet. So other than the badge and no supercharger....its the same. I can deal with that considering in the future I was planning to get it supercharged anyways. And I just feel proud I own 1 of 2 sports in my city. The other sport I think is owned by a druggie. good story behind that one...

She is on some messed up drugs then. It was a really nice white sport until she added a fake hood scoop which is literally super glued onto it to make it look like she redid her engine. The Hawaiian lays hanging on her mirror don't help to the cause.....I almost bought that sport from the dealership but opted for the silver version (never looks dirty). She bought the car using all cash for everything. Literally brought a bag of money in and walked out with a car.

why did they make so many variations of the cobalt? Im all confused again. So my sport is like an SS without the supercharger and is based off of the......eh screw it. Can someone fill me in on what the ss/tc, natural aspirated(?), sport, any other models are and their differences? Sorry, im still new to this and curious as hell now.

06 There was a 2.0 SC and a 2.4 badged as SS with VVT (variable valve timing) 171 hp NOT SUPERCHARGED.
07 They dropped the 2.4 SS and called it SPORT gains 2hp (173 hp)
08 No more SS/SC =( only Sport
09 SS/TC is a 2.0 with VVT
2.4 with VVT is just a little extra oompf but by far is no comparison to either of the boosted engines. I should know because I used to have one.
Mostly GM did it because there is a market for people who love the base cobalt but just wanted a little more. Or for people who loved the SS/SC but couldnt afford the car or the insurance. The 2.4 N/A SS and the Sport both have a little extra power than the 150hp 2.2 and an upgraded suspension.
We actually agreed on something
that's amazing
07 LE5's are badged as SS
that's amazing
05 SS 2.0 Supercharged only with NO VVT
06 There was a 2.0 SC and a 2.4 badged as SS with VVT (variable valve timing) 171 hp NOT SUPERCHARGED.
08 They dropped the 2.4 SS and called it SPORT gains 2hp (173 hp)
08 No more SS/SC =( only Sport, added SS/TC
09 SSTC is a 2.0 with VVT
2.4 with VVT is just a little extra oompf but by far is no comparison to either of the boosted engines. I should know because I used to have one.

I was able to find some info on the different types of cobalts but was getting confused with everything. Thanks for the help clarifying things john. haha, being proud of my sport is gone....its just normal now.

I always thought there was only one SS for 05 . But then there was a number break down of model's by year and it listed the SS/NA as being produced in 2005. I just figured out why

The Cobalt SS, with a 2.4L engine, will debut in mid-2005 as 2006 model.

Your forgetting the 2008 SS/TC's........
The 08-09 SS/TC has different brakes, suspension (springs/struts/sways) then the previous models not even going into the engine and other things that are slighly different. The 08+ "Sports" are carry overs from them 05-07 SS/NA, just not labeled SS's, SS/NA's and Sports also can have an automatic tranniy, GM knows that its a select few that will drive manuals, a smaller percentage of the people that purchase cars. The SS/NA or 08+ "Sport" provides an option for a large majority of the crowd thats wants an automatic tranny, but at the same time would like slighly more performance. So a 2008+ "Sport" is more closely related to a 05-07 SS/NA during those years.
Hell, the way its looking, I could walk around saying I own a 2008 Cobalt super sport SS/TC (2.0000000L) N/A.
fancy words just make it look smarter and kewler. lol Now where did I put my twin turbine engines. My sport will be turbocharged!
Seriously though, it sounds like GM just tweaked the cobalt in a few aspects and called it a different version. And I wanted to get a manual just so I could learn how to drive one (and I heard they are better in the snow) but my dad wouldn't let me....cause he can't drive one.

Just out of curiousity. What cars could my sport beat in just simple racing. (streets/highway). I haven't modded it yet but want to get it supercharged eventually. This is my first car so i am rather clueless in terms of pretty much everything. All i know is that I can run civics into the ground.
Here's a much easier way to explain it, including all the cars:

It will beat every stock Civic, except for the newest Si unless you run into a bad driver. So I'm assuming you haven't run into one of those yet. Our cars stock can't really beat anything respectable. It took my stock 5-spd an embarassingly long time to pull past a 150 hp Neon last night.
