pretty much. Ions exterior is nice (I don't like the interior - dash and stuff is too weird for me) Cobalt is awesome all the way around.

ion is sliightly lighter (I wanna say 50lbs?) and IIRC the redline only comes with the FE3 suspension, not the FE5 setup on the cobalts. Pretty sure they have slightly more clearance in the engine bay as well.

But for the most part, its the exact same car with different skin/dash, just like RSX-S to civic-si

There are several differences between the Ion and the Cobalt SS. The last year of production for the Ion with the supercharged engine was in the 2007 Ion Red Line. The engine is Ecotec 2.0L Supercharged I-4 with a 5 speed manual transmission. Is generates 205 horsepower and is capable of achieving 0-to-60 mph (0-to-97 km/h) acceleration in an estimated 6.2 seconds. The 2010 Cobalt SS comes standard with the ECOTEC Turbo 2.0L, Variable Valve Timing DOHC 4-cylinder DI engine that can generate up to 260 horsepower. It also includes the 5 speed manual transmission. I would recommend test-driving both vehicles to get a feel for which vehicle would suit your needs best. I am also going to provide you a couple of links to sites where you can more information since it seems that you will be in the market in the near future. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to get back to me. Thank you.

So they use the same trans and suspension setup? Does one outperform the other in any way?

I thought the redline was only rated at 195hp vs the Balt ss at 205. Can't remember why or if that was even every year...

I would like to clarify my previous message regarding the differences between the Ion and the Cobalt SS. The information provided on the Cobalt was regarding the 2010 model year. It appears that both the 2007 Ion Red Line and the 2007 Cobalt SS both contain the LSJ engine, which is the 2.0 liter supercharged and intercooled inline 4-cylinder engine. This engine generates 205 horsepower in both vehicles. It also has the same torque as well as compression ratio. However it does appear that block material in the Cobalt is cast aluminum while the Ion has cast aluminum with cast iron cylinder liners. It also appears that the Ion has a chrome exhaust tip and a three-way catalyst. If you would like more information, please feel free to contact me. Thank you.

please, stop reading whatever you are reading. The LSJs in the ion and cobalt are identical, both having iron sleeves, ALL cars have 3 way catalysts these days, etc. We appreciate the effort...but you're not really providing anything of any use.

Buy either one you want. They are both great units. My have many friends with Ion's and Cobalt's. Cobalt has different suspension but the power plant's are 100% identical. Do your research and choose the unit you want. Oh, the Ion has 4 doors. That is pretty nice.

ion has diff suspension, 4 doors, diff engine mounts. Some but not all parts for bolt ons are swap-able. Both ard fine and dandy, but drive each one and see for yourself.

An Ion is a charged partical. It can be any element that has a diffrent number of protons and electrons. Cobalt is a metal, atomic Number 27, having 27 Protons. If Cobalt had more then 27 or less then 27 electrons, then it would be an Ion as well as a Cobalt.

Also the instrument cluster is placed above the center console instead of being in front of the steering wheel

Go with an Ion RedLine. They are rare & can disappoint a lot of people!
