Drove a SS today.... no thanks.

Local dealer got in a yellow SS yesterday and I kinda thought about stepping up, so I stopped by to drive it. Only thing I liked over mine was the power sunroof. It didn't feel that much more powerful, and when it climbed up in the RPM range, it suddenly sounded like a '86 Honda with a fart pipe on the back. Don't try to see whats behind you through the back window, because that large hideous wing blocks all view. I was reminded of driving a cube van backing up. I will say the ride wasn't bad like I thought it would be on the low profile tires, but I didn't drive it long. Needless to say, I like my 13k, 180 a month base a whole lot more now.

I will drive my base for another couple years, then get that GTO I have wanted since they came back out. Thats the step up for me.

LOL
"1986 Honda with a fart pipe." My friend has a Accord with the fart pipe and it's louder than the SS. The SS only makes sound when your really hopping on the gas.

I am pretty sure the wing is going to go first on my SS and get replaced with the Razzi wing. While it obstructs your vision it doesn't prevent you from seeing cars in the rear view mirror. It only prevents you from seeing the whole car. At first I though the same thing, but as time goes by you realize the only cars that can get blocked from view are the ones way behind you. The blind spots are the worst but I expect it's the same on all the coupes.

interesting to see a Cobalt owner not liking the SS version. I think I would like it (wing and 18's aside) I have driven V6 Camaros and then owned an IROC-Z--a huge upgrade on a V6.

But the base Cobalt is in my future and the base is plenty good.

Yes definitely interesting to see a base owner not liking the SS.

Strange that you said it doesn't feel that much faster. It definitely is - a solid 2+ seconds faster to 60mph. I wonder why it didn't feel that way to you?

I actually just put in an order for an SS today. I drove a base coupe first - it was nice, actually felt reasonably peppy. Hope I like the SS better than you did.

I know its faster then my base, but it doesn't feel as much faster as the numbers say it is. I have over 2,000 miles on my base now, and its really starting to loosen up and run good now though too.

maybe it didn't feel faster because of the way it delivers power. There is no huge spike in power, the tq curve is broad and flat and the hp curve is linear. This gives a smooth feeling when driving and may lead you to feel like you're not going faster. 0-60 numbers don't lie though, the SS is much faster.
Take a look.

Yeah, that's what I mean. For a substantially faster car, it's odd that it didn't feel that way to you. Maybe you didn't really get on it?

Hello fellow Grand Blanc resident. That car must have been a lemon because a boosted Ecotec should scoot no problem. I agree with the wing, my Black SS when I buy it will have the wing off as soon as I get home. The stock ss wheels are going to go also (too heavy) and I know of an evo-hood in production for the cobalt. Either cobalt you buy can look and run great when built with the right parts, but the SS comes available with Limited Slip, Aluminum front A arms, better bushings, etc. It's not just a motor upgrade.

Well I didn't hammer on it hard like I do mine, since its brand new. As for power, I drive Z28's and such all the time, so no 4 banger is going to be earth shattering to me. Thats why I want a GTO next.

But I wouldn't be able to live with the wing for sure after having mine where you can actually see out of the rear even with a wing. Besides, wings are just for looks, and the SS doesn't do that well IMO. Its too overdone and doesn't look balanced. I do love the ground effects though. Its ok, I will just spend a couple grand to do the wheels, suspension, and sunroof and be all set.

DomesticDemonSS- whats up? Nice to see more people from Michigan on here.

My dad has a 2005 Black GTO, it's an Auto though which sucks but still a great car with a great chassis. I still Like my C4 corvette better but the new GTO is such a bargain for the money. Handles great, build quality is superb, interior and seats are crafted well.

I see your car in the Grand Mall occasionally, I live off of saginaw and perry in Kings Pointe. I have alot of friends close by with Gm small cars (ion redline, Cavalier's, sunfires, etc) you should come hang out sometime.

Ah yeah I go to Hobbytown USA often for parts. Yeah I have seen your car around too now that I think about it.

Your not far at all from me, I live at Dort and Grand Blanc.

And man, how can you have a GTO and not have a 6 speed?

Hit me up on aim sometime, same name that I use here.

Exactly what I said, but he's old and usually likes his cadillacs, so for him I guess it's best. Even though two cars before this he had a 6 speed C5 which him and my mom drove, go figure.

He got the car for 25k though (Gm Exec) so it was a steal. That ls2 is such a great motor. If you do buy one get the 05 for sure, better brakes and a Hell of a motor!

I will get ahold of you on aim.

159 for a new car is a super deal. My payment is 457/month for my SS/SC over 48 months. I also signed and drived (I had equity on my tradein however)

I dont like the wing too much myself, either...Ive thought that when I do buy one, I'll ask the dealer to put the LS touring wing on there...nice and low profile, like on 2nd Gen Cavaliers and Sunbirds...

(Neons hidden by Z24 skirts now, btw )

This is just plain silly... There is no "going rate" for financing. You gotta qualify for a loan and everybody's credit is different.

And there's a difference between the SS and SS/SC. You guys are the ones who are supposed to know more about these cars than anybody else, and some of you still don't seem to get this part. It's just sad.

The fact that there is only one SS availabe I could have drove makes you look stupid for bitching about not saying ss/SC. Besides, who the hell gives a ****.

And because some of us own a cobalt we are supposed to all be all knowing cobalt gods? Only you man...
