The END of COBALTSS.NET
The END of COBALTSS.NET
(Just for clarification - Not really the end of the site - Well, Hopefully not for a long time - Just play on words to get people to read - my bad!) - BUT - the end is approaching for the car that started it all..... Post is just a salute to the car and to the creators of this site.
All in all - an impressive - if brief - run ... maybe more impressive than some would have you believe.
I'm disappointed that the Cobalt will be dead and from it's ashes will rise The Cruze. Early indications are that the Cruze will be a fine car - BUT - with nothing at all in the near future that could match the Performance of any of the Cobalt SS models. The Cruze will truly be a 'new' model - just as - the Cobalt was basically a completely different car than the one that came before.
Such is life.. The Cobalt replaced the Cavalier in 2005 and has been associated with that car ever since - even though - the cars shared almost nothing. In fact - It may be hard to remember because of all the negative press that has been heaped on - but - Many first reviews were quite good - calling the Cobalt a far better car than it's predecessor. I chose a positive review of course - there were some negative - but - I found more positive than negative out there initially.
I already wrote pretty much my complete story on ownership at General Cobalt - Road to my Cobalt SS Turbo... needless to say - I am a fan of the car.

The Supercharged SS Version has received some negative comments since the turbo debuted - more a case of how great the Turbo is - and not because the SC is a bad car. The linked Motor Trend review is pretty impressive.

- Just a side note: The Base SS/ Sport models with the 2.4 are not given much respect 'in general' because the TC and SC models are such better performers BUT - they were a nice step up over the base models - and in relation to price with other vehicle's - had impressive performance.. in a 2007 comparison - the 2.4 came in second place for cars starting at less than $20,000 - only behind the V6 mustang.
Now the Turbo... Mostly positive reviews - AND - in some cases... True overall praise. I even found some that didn't completely trash the interior : ) All SS's were produced in very limited #'s - so - if you have one you shouldn't be seeing your car on every corner. I wish I could buy a second new SS turbo while they are still out there - put it in storage - and only take it out when my current car dies after hopefully a long full life.

2005 Review:
"If turned heads on the freeway are any guide, the Cobalt SS may be one of the best lures yet to get younger drivers coveting Chevrolets. What's even more promising is the depth of the competency of the SS; it reflects positively on the soundness of the entire Cobalt line and points to a car that's better, far better in a few ways, than it had to be. If this is a glimpse of a new GM that'll no longer settle for "just good enough," we're genuinely heartened."

2008 Review:
"The initial forays to The Ring were to develop the Corvette. But, along the way, these engineers were also assigned to spruce up Chevrolet's humdrum Cobalt into a world-class performer. As a result, Chevrolet has an impressive sport compact car that has the alacrity of cars normally costing twice its $25,000 price tag."
"The interior is also more upscale than other Cobalts with suede-like seat inserts to grip your backside in the corners, satin nickel trim and titanium-faced instruments. A boost gauge is incorporated in the base of the A-Pillar; in the case of this tester, it was offset by about 30 degrees making it hard to read while in motion."
"The performance bargain of the year?
Standard equipment includes air conditioning, cruise, tilt steering wheel, upgraded audio system with Pioneer amplifier and seven speakers, including a 10-inch subwoofer, power locks and remote keyless entry. While some of the small details are less than impressive, the all-round performance and refinement of chassis and drive train cannot be matched at anything near this price."

cobaltss.net is far from over. I doubt it will ever grow into what the dsm forums are, but it'll still be a unique and very large site. Over the next few years, you will see some really fast cobalts start to come out of their woodsheds and get some attention.

I agree. While the SS may never see as large of an aftermarket as many other cars such as the civic, I think in the future with the large number of LS/LTs and the limited number of true SS, you will start to see some (not many, but some) engine/tranny swaps because the excuse of "just buy an SS" will no longer really be valid. That and the aftermarket for the 2.2 will begin to explode as the potential for the engine will really be tapped. I foresee many great builds in the coming future, as expertise only really comes with experience, and the car has not been around for that long.

Haha I was gonna say, I used to own a tiburon and the forums barely died when the genesis came out, i think we lost 3 people haha, just cause a car isn't made anymore doesnt mean every company that makes parts for them is gonna stop
The Cobalt was a high selling car. So the death of the current Delta platform isn't going to mean the death of CobaltSS.net or other related sites. So far, the only thing right now that seems to be killing CSS is just the server screwups.
But anyways, just because a car goes out of production doesn't mean the forums just all of a sudden dry up. Grand Am Owner's Club is still up and thriving despite the Grand Am being discontinued since 2005.

"The new car is based on an entirely different platform, GM's global "Delta" architecture."
"The fastback coupe bears a resemblance to the Cavalier it replaced in 2005, right down to its high, rounded tail and triangular rear quarter windows; though in fact Cobalt shares little with its predecessor but its looks"

Glad some people saw some humor... Title was just going to be The "END of the COBALT" - BUT - figured the one I chose would get attention..
In the opening of the OP I basically said that the site is going no where.. (then added to that) but.. per some posts.. it looks like people didn't read the post and are just reading the title. Too bad - It's actualy not a bad post... in my biased opinion of course... Cobalt gets a bad rap from some - BUT - the overall run was actually impessive.
Kinda the same here... never had a car I planned on keeping long term. That's the plan - at least for now. Pay it off - then - get something else and only drive her in nice weather. I wish I could afford two cars now. People do that type of thing with classics.. expensive cars.. and some may think it nuts to do with a Cobalt.. just shows how much I love this car.

Lately I have been seeing far more SS/SCs being picked up used (typically lease returns) and showing up at our meets. As original owners sell them and others pick them up used you'll see a whole new group of people come rolling through for years to come. The only thing that scares the hell out of me, some of the SS/SCs are going so cheap around here a 16 year old could afford it themselves as their first car...that spells trouble
