The END of COBALTSS.NET
All in all - an impressive - if brief - run ... maybe more impressive than some would have you believe.
I'm disappointed that the Cobalt will be dead and from it's ashes will rise The Cruze. Early indications are that the Cruze will be a fine car - BUT - with nothing at all in the near future that could match the Performance of any of the Cobalt SS models. The Cruze will truly be a 'new' model - just as - the Cobalt was basically a completely different car than the one that came before.

I'm just here because I love the Cobalt SS and wanted to share stories with others of like mind - not debate or be rude to othes - but - Be careful challenging me my friend - I'm a pretty good debater or trash talker.. if that's what you want Last edited by John Lake; Apr 14, 2010 at 10:40 AM. Ya, their first owner probably cared for it day in and day out only to be picked up by someone who likely will barely give it the time of day. I'm seriously considering holding onto my TC for years, even when I go to purchase a new car down the road. This is the first car I've bothered putting any money into, and now all I can visualize is the loss I'm going to take at a dealer if I traded in. I have a two car garage so it'll have somewhere to hang out
Like that you said the thread was a milestone though.. now that does sound cool
Whoa... hold on a second. Thought you were just being cool - but - you are a moderator ?? Then - not cool my brother. I have had nothing but civil conversations here. Someone comes on and calls me 'Dumb' .. and all I did was call them out .. Please explain why I am in the wrong ?... because I don't get it.

self is always sarcastic and i think you took it seriously, which on this forum is a waste IMO
but no worries just keep the thread on topic with a walk down memory lane and i think people have said it...the platform may have halted production but the spirit and fun are still strong.
Dude, i know your new but my "mod powers" are limited at best and restricted to one forum...I dont care, but this thread will be 10 pages in a weeks time so try not to clutter it up with e-retaliation.

I have no desire for any kind of retaliation - but - if someone calls me out - I expect them to be able back it up... that's all. The conversation would/ should still be on topic of the OP if he wants to continue..
i'm deff keeping my car till the wheels fall off as others have stated, but then start replacing things with performance parts as they break. once it's paid off and i can save up some cash, i'd like to buy a midsized truck for in the winter
Thank You!- Just an fyi.. I tried to send the same message by clicking on your personal data - but - the message just sat there for 10 minutes trying to load.
Very good thread, I too will be keeping my 2009 Cobalt SS Turbo for ever. #1 its white and beautiful
. So far has not seen one grain of salt since it sat from 11/1-3/25 And It only has 11k i do not plan on putting alot on it at all this summer as i now have a nice WRX to drive everywhere ontop of my DD sunfire.
Great to read that a bunch of you are 'at least planning' to keep your cars a long time (like Me).. That says a lot about them. When I was younger I got sick of each car pretty fast - moved on to the next.
Unless something bad happens - or a drastic change of thought - I'll be racing roads full of electric cars a decade from now. I know those electric cars can be very fast (Tesla)... BUT.. the 'quiet' they make accelerating comes no where close to the music we hear rowing through the gears.. I even love the turbo whine!
So.. hats off to Chevy on this one!! A truly outstanding entry into it's storied history...
Thanks Mike... lol just commented on people holding on to their cars.
There is a white one still sitting on the lot that I got my Black one. In fact - they were right next to each other. I can't believe these things are not moving faster since the end is near! White is a great color - nothing shows up on them.. slight dings, scratches. Black.. another story
And.. Very nice - you are doing what I wish I could do to keep mileage low - it adds up so damn fast ! Having the WRX as another car isn't too shabby either !

ok - enough of that BS... Back to the SS
Cobalt SS - Classic in the making.....
Long Post - lots of quotes - but - I think important. I was going to start a new thread - but - talk of the Cobalt becoming a classic has come up on this thread - so... just continuing on that path...
The Article the quotes are from is unfair to the SS Supercharged and Base Cobalt Models. They were actually very good cars - links to excellent reviews are on the OP....
The article does praise the SS Turbo (Except interior - of course - but.. liked the seats). There is no mention of the word 'Classic' - BUT - I think it makes a great case for it being a future classic collectable by just explaining the Turbo's virtues....
Add to those amazing virtues that the SS models were made in very limited numbers.. and - we have a car that raises the entire Cobalt line to new heights.
The first-gen Cobalt SS failed to deliver with a supercharged 2.0L Ecotec four-cylinder producing 205 horsepower and a cast of supporting components that did little to hide the Cobalt's rental car roots. But then something entirely unexpected happened. The GM Performance Division completely reworked the Cobalt SS for 2008, swapping in a more powerful turbocharged engine, upgrading the rest of the mechanicals, and tweaking the entire package on the world's most demanding race tracks, including the famed Nürburgring in Germany.
The result is and we're not kidding here the most impressive performance car to wear a bow-tie badge on sale today*. Exactly how General Motors turned a bottom-of-the-pack, front-wheel-drive econocar into a class-leading sport compact is revealed after the jump.
*My colleagues thought it best to explain this statement. There's not a bow-tie badge to be found on the Corvette and you can't find a Camaro SS on a dealer lot anywhere yet.

The heart of the Cobalt SS Turbo is its engine, a turbocharged, direct-inject version of the same 2.0L Ecotec in the first-gen car that now produces 260 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It is the Alpha and Omega of the Ecotec engine family and a marvel of modern engineering. Available since 2008 in the Cobalt SS Turbo and HHR SS, and also in the Pontiac Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Red Line, the turbo DI Ecotec does now what Ford promises its EcoBoost engines will do in a few years. That is, produce V6 power with four-cylinder fuel economy. Case in point, the Cobalt SS Turbo returns 30 mpg on the highway.
Though peak torque arrives early on at 2,000 rpm, this engine pulls the Cobalt SS Turbo like Usain Bolt dragging a Little Red Flyer for 200 meters. Turbo lag is scant, with a torrent rush of power coming on early and building linearly until the tach needle begins bouncing against its 6,250 rpm redline. Chevy claims the Cobalt SS Turbo will hit 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, which must be conservative considering how fast the trip feels.

Since the Autoblog Proving Grounds is still under construction (in my mind), we can't tell you what it's like to drive the Cobalt SS Turbo at 11/10ths. Fortunately, the latest issue of Car and Driver includes a massive comparison test called the Lightning Lap in which 22 cars ranging in price from the $22,995 Cobalt SS to the $282,306 Ferrari 430 Scuderia are raced around Virginia International Raceway. The list of cars slower than the Cobalt SS around VIR tells the whole story:
Mitsubishi Lancer EVO MR
Lexus IS-F
Audi S5
Honda S2000 CR
Dodge Challenger SRT-8
Lotus Elise SC
Subaru Impreza WRX STI
Dodge Caliber SRT-4
Volkswagen R32
Honda Civic Mugen Si(Click here for each car's actual lap time at CARandDRIVER.com, look for the "Results Chart" link in the lower-right corner.)
The Cobalt SS Turbo is clearly outgunned in the engine department by a few of these vehicles, besting only the Civic Mugen Si, R32, S2000 CR and the Elise SC with its 260-hp engine. But c'mon, is the Cobalt SS Turbo really quicker than the legendary Lancer, the 416-hp IS-F, and the 425-hp Challenger SRT-8 around VIR's 4.2-mile track? Apparently so says C&D, who were just as stunned as were by the Chevy's particular brand of canned whoopass.

Our conclusion is that the 2009 Cobalt SS Turbo is freakishly good at going fast and the best bang-for-the-buck value below $30,000. The GM Performance Division has salvaged this era of small cars for Chevy by taking the Cobalt so far beyond what it should be capable that we scratch our heads wondering why the base model is so bad.
The Cobalt name will have been around for just six years when the new Chevy Cruze comes on-line in late 2010. It would have been remembered as an incentive-laden rental return were it not for this exceptional variant. The SS Turbo not only ends the Cobalt's run on a bright spot, but also brings back some shine to that SS badge on its trunk.

Continuation of POST #42 .. Unless anyone wants to argue the point - or continuing posting on this thread - I'll stop buggin ya's and just post some more amazing quotes now (RoadAndTrack) and let this thread fade in to the endless depths of cyberspace - where it will drift in to obscurity...
Viewing everything.. people, art, cars... everyone knows Beauty is in the eye of the beholder .... Opinions can differ greatly - I agree with the review (link below) that the Cobalt sedan has bland styling.... not something I would buy - but others like it. Some like the coupe - some don't. I have read many negative reviews concerning styling - lots good too.. I personally think the coupe looks good even in base form and looks great in all SS forms. It has a sporty but not in your face vibe.
Classic styling ? To me - I think the styling holds up and will stand the test of time - I think it looks better than a lot of the cars out there... a cool looking car. Just a personal opinion on that ... with performance like this... It don't have to be too pretty to stand that test of time : )
2008 SS sedan tops Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart , Subaru Impreza WRX and Mazdaspeed3 as the King of the Sport Compacts.
A Time for Turbos: The Conclusion - Comparison Test
Four sub-$30,000 turbocharged sport-compacts vie for your hearts and checkbooks

"The Cobalt SS may be the most underrated car in the world. We're about to set it free of that title."
"the Cobalt SS posted test-best numbers in the skidpad and slalom — a superb 0.92g and 70.0 mph, respectively. And it didn't just win, it dominated the others."
"The Cobalt SS won this test by virtue of being good (more often great) at just about everything. It won three of the seven Performance categories outright, while never finishing worse than second in the rest. In our Subjective section, it won six of the 12 categories, all of them performance-related. The WRX put up a phenomenal fight, and is a class act itself, but it just couldn't overcome the Chevy's performance advantages. Kim summed it up thus: ""Dynamically, the Cobalt SS is the best — it completely shocked us."
"So for all those who have said, "I'd buy an American car if they made one that could compete with the Europeans and Japanese," Chevy is calling your bluff. Because the Cobalt SS doesn't just compete with the foreign cars, it beats them. It is the hottest-performing sports compact you can buy in the U.S. for under $30,000. That it's also the least expensive in this test is even more reason to rush to your Chevy dealer immediately. Not only will it help stimulate the economy, but every aspect of your enthusiast driving senses as well"

I agree. While the SS may never see as large of an aftermarket as many other cars such as the civic, I think in the future with the large number of LS/LTs and the limited number of true SS, you will start to see some (not many, but some) engine/tranny swaps because the excuse of "just buy an SS" will no longer really be valid. That and the aftermarket for the 2.2 will begin to explode as the potential for the engine will really be tapped. I foresee many great builds in the coming future, as expertise only really comes with experience, and the car has not been around for that long.
Hey Vaughn... I was thinking of your 'retaliation' comment and just wanted to make sure my true intent was understood...
It's difficult to gage emotion via online - especially - when the person is not known except for online....
To be clear.. I was not writing post's 30, 32, 34 in any anger - I actually had a bemused look on my face - because the gauntlet had been thrown down towards me in such an irresponsible manner (by the Poster)... hey.. he may be a good guy.. no clue... and it's no biggie... I just wanted play...
I actually enjoy being challenged to a duel of wits.. My wife says I think I'm always right
But.. I know the truth is I have been proven wrong many many times...
ok - enough of that BS... Back to the SS

Already passed from my consciousness. A very minor blip on an enjoyable ride through this site.. AND.. I actually even enjoyed that. As long as I own the car (which right now - I hope until I die) I'll be checking in.. BUT. Prolly won't blog that much more - said pretty much everything I had to say - but - I enjoyed the ride and I'm glad this site is here! A Big Thank You to the creators! And a big two thumbs up to Chevy.. nice job!
