Engine Support Brace/Fixture

I'm going to be installing a new clutch in just uner 2 weeks. I was told I need an engine support brace/fixture. My question is where can I find one? Thanks guys.

Is it possible that Autozone would have one that they rent out?

i know someone has to know something about this...

maybe... I've never had to use one one b4 but the contraption I'm talking about sits on top and supports the engine. We may be talking about the same thing, I've only heard it called a brace or a fixture...

are you doing it on a hoist or on the ground??? you dont need the fixture, gm says everything needs them but because the engine has a top motor mount the engine isnt going to fall out of the car, you just need to support the engine with a stand under the oilpan when you pull the tranny out.

you want what is called a cherry picker, engine hoist, engine puller... or you could also be talking about something that sits on the ground and lifts up kinda like a jack stand but its called an enigne/trany stand. personaly if its gona be on a lift i would use an engine stand ( just a tall jack stand to hold the motor/trany)... imo that would work the best. good luck man i heard it is hard i have to do it soon lol.

no i am not looking for a cherry picker, or and engine hoist... I'm looking for a support brace it sits on the strut mount and holds the engine in place....

It would be pretty hard to use a cherry picker while the car is on alift .... when it would come time to lower or raise the car that would cause a problem. Thanks for the help though.

just use a tall stand to hold the motor up when the car in in the air. you wont need a hanger, when you remove the frame the motor and tranny will hang from the upper motor mount and top tranny mount, when you get the jack under the tranny you remove the tranny mount, then put the stand under the engine and pull the tranny off. this is how i do 75% of fwd stuff.

you only need an engine support bar (aka engine hanger) when the motor is only mounted to the subframe and no mounts (dogbone or torque arm mounts dont count) are bolted to the body. the angine hanger does exactly that, hangs the engine from cables or chains while you remove the subframe. being the cobalt has engine and tranny mounts bolted to the body, you dont need it.

No you don't want that, the easiest way to do the clutch is whats lined out in the GM Build Book. OP look to there for all your answers and see if that helps.

What they're probably talking about is a beam across the top of the engine bay and attached to the struts on both sides. It would have two long threaded rods attached. The other end of the rods would attach somewhere on the engine. You can screw the rods up and down to take a little tension on the rods to remove the trans without worrying about it falling on the floor and there is nothing in your way underneath. When reinstalling the trans it's much easier to line up the trans with the engine when everything is moving around. That's no fun with the engine moving around. Not even a little. With the beam the trans is a one man job. I know. I've had the engine/trans in and out of my LS1 powered Fiero four times. Never with help. And on jack stands ONLY. If you're imaginative and mechanically inclined you could make a make shift setup to do what the big bucks factory engine support does. Good luck!!

Here's a website I just found. You just follow the instructions to sign up and you will get step by step instructions on clutch replacement. It's a great site..

Actually you will not even have to sign up. That link will get you straight to what you want. I would still do it my way though. Good luck.
