Question Fuels for the SS and SS Supercharged

I wanted to know is their really that much of a difference if you use straight unleaded, or if you use higher octane, is there that much of a difference, and is the better fuel required?

GM requires you to use high octane fuel in the SS/SC, but I believe you could use regular in the 2.4 and the 2.2

For the 2.2 and 2.4, regular octane is fine.

For us 2.0's, the higher octane is required for the car to run at optimum performance.

The manual states all motors can run on 87 octane...unfortuatly on the 2.0 you wont get all the get up as you normaly would...91 or higher is recommended but not required.

God, I couldn't imagine running my baby with 87 octane! With 87 you would definately have to be on guard for detination.

your car won't detinat with 87. it will how ever retard the spark timeing and that = less power and wors economy

If you take the time to read the manual, it says that 91 is recommended but not required for both the 2.4 and 2.0. 87 is fine in the 2.2. You can run 87 in the 2.0 and 2.4 as well, but the computer might pull some timing due to detonation.

Think of it this way. If 87 is 2.00$ and 93 is 2.20 and you have a 2.0 SC there is no reason not to put in the 93 because in the long run it's about a two dollar difference over 10 gallons. If you can't afford that you can't afford the car. I know this wasn't specifically about price and you asking if you could run 87 in the SC but the root of all these threads like this is money. Don't skimp on gas, use the good stuff and try to use top tier like Vpower if you can because it really does make a difference.

Good luck and read your owners manual, there is a lot of good stuff in there.

My dealer filled my first tank w/ 87. I replaced with 93 when it went empty and noticed a small difference both performance and mpg. I could probably get away with 89... but no more 87 in my baby. 93 unless it's not available!

hmm... the SS-SC manual says regular gas is fine... I've never used anything else, and never had a problem yet... even in the cold weather here.

It's when you do the stage kits, that premuim fuel is required, otherwise you get nasty knocking...

For the extra couple bucks, I'll run the hi test (Sunoco Ultra 94)

As far as the above post , wont 110 octane in a stock tuned lsj cause major issues?
I heard you might as well pee in you're gas tank...

The stock SS/SC can run on 87+.

However, if you have GM Stage 2 or any other higher-boost/rev mods, use 91+ or you risk detonation and spark timing retardation. These actually cause decreased gas economy, so the money spent on higher octane somewhat balances out.

Thank you, drive thru...

are you 100% on that? im sure it says that using regular grade octane is acceptable, but im sure that it also warms of KR, my suggestion, stick to its recomended octance, premium/91
