Funny I have to park my 06 SS for winter

So after reading the forums and talking to various people about the SS. I've come to the conclusion that instead of beating the crap out of my cobalt with blizzaks on it this winter and letting the salt rust it to death. I'm going to park her for the winter. Mind you my girlfriend is pretty not happy about this seeings the cobalt was my "DD" and winter car too to keep my trans am for 3 seasons fun. Plus I fell inlove with the car and enjoy driving it and it always seems to turns head especially people when they go is that factory ? Of course it is. LOL. But hands down even with blizzaks I just don't see this thing being a snow friendly machine nor worth rusting out in the Ohio rust belt. So I went and I will be picking up either a 2009 Cherry red Chevy impala SS 55k miles, 5.3L fwd, kind of plane jane car to be honest but for some reason I just love it I don't know why. Then I come across a Blue 2013 Cruze LTZ, 1.4L turbo damn near 40 mpg, leather, and every bell and whistle you could imagine. Plus to my shocking discovery for a eco turbo set up that little thing scoots. Little help here guys chime in give me some .02's. I'm making this decision late tomorrow night and just keep going back and forth. Figured I'd post here everyone's friendly enough it seems

I live in northwest Indiana. Salt is brutal to any car but i have an 04 silverado for my winter driver. I only bring my balt out once the snows been cleared. I have decent enough all season tires so for small amounts of snow its ok. The truck hands down is the way to go for winter

I lived in Alaska for 20 years. Had my SS/TC for 3 winters and it worked fine. But if you're getting something for the winter I'd say AWD otherwise just drive the cobalt.

yep park it for the winter! it is not a snow friendly machine, no traction control, manual, lowprofile wide tires, tight 1st gear, fwd, stiff suspension, the creaks and rattles in the cold are awful, its runs like **** with the defroster on and heat all the way up... its awful on so many levels

I DD my car year round in Colorado. Hell I've taken it in the mountains when its snowing and haven't had any issues.

I have Nitto Motivo all season tires and car is lowered. Sure its not as good as an AWD car but its not hard to drive lol.

The only time I got stuck was when there was around 9 in of snow on the ground and I wanted to do donuts in the parking lot lol.

If those are you choices, I'd probably go with the cruze for a winter car, but the cobalt is fine in snow.

AWD everything is big dollars up here even on the monthly payment and I just don't feel like sinking a few grand into a winter awd or 4x4 car with over 100k that is going to be a money pit. The Cobalt I'm sure i'd be fine in the snow being an experienced snow driver and living my entire life in the snow belt. But as bad as it can handle I'd almost rather Keep the cobalt rust free like it is right now. Up here 2 winters and a few missed car washes i'm rusted out lol.

Manual is a bonus in winter. (unless your shifter cables freeze lol-sstc's)

Those two cars you're looking at are worth more than your 06 ss. Keep your 06 ss as a year round DD and spend that money elsewhere. An impala or cruze will be almost identical to driving your cobalt in the winter. Kind of sounds like you just want to add another vehicle to your massive collection :p

Get a 97-01 Jeep Cherokee XJ, best winter car ever, while being affordable.

Lmao I work extremely hard and a lot of hours . My fleet is massive but being a full time police dispatcher and having my computer company side work thing I earn my keep. Picked up the 2013 Cruz LTZ with 22k miles. Reason I needed another car as well the equinox I got for my girlfriend and all my cars are manual Transmission so having another the cruze is nice incase. But yeah the SS would be ok on some blizzaks but why ruin a beautiful well maintained SS in Ohio salt infested winters.

New cars don't really rust due to the galvanized steel used to make them. I just don't see how it's practical to first buy another car, then register it, pay insurance on it, and then have to maintain & repair it. Sounds like a giant waste of money just to prevent a few rock salt chips and surface rust on a $5000 economy car that's not even rare to begin with, lol.

I kept my TC off the road for the 1st winter. Than I couldn't stand not driving it so it's an all year rounder DD. Rider for 8 years/500k and upgrade to whatever is the latest and greatest I'm thinking.

All of this makes sense. Yeah it's a cobalt very true. But I like the car and would love to keep it going my insurance for all of my cars as it stands right now fully covered on 3.. The formula and 88trans am are parked with fire and theft.. Adding the cruze puts me at 221.00 a month. Payment on the cruze 219.00 a month. Mind you this insurance rates is a 100% clean driving record never an accident or ticket since the day I was handed a set of keys

Very nice. I bet it's hard to not speed. I've gotten numerous tickets in my younger days, how did you avoid it?

Also the cruze which I like has a nice bumper to bumper for 2 years through chevy (certified). Still has manufacturer warranty for years to come. Also the dealership I go through has the drive for life power train warranty as well wheel bearings and abs system. Now is this logical ? nope not one bit you guys are right on that. Is it a waste of over 200 a month ? sure. But I have 43k original miles on that cobalt with 0 rust previous owner never let it hit snow. But some of you have me thinking driving your cobalts in the snow was ok. But the lack of TC kinda sucks. I have a week to take the cruze back if i really must. LOL

I mean I grew up my old being a cleveland cop. But just have to know where to speed and where to not. Yeah i got pulled over here and there but always admit " I was speeding i'm a moron i'm terribly sorry officer" and dealt with the wrath of my old man yapping at me later LOL. But I also an a tech geak and like to put jammers and radar detectors in my cars haha. At least all my fast ones. But my cobalt and my 02 trans am both have jammers in them. Great little investment just don't get caught with one . But also now I'm a Police dispatcher and my dad being a cop it gives me some breathing room. But hands down I usually take my time where I am going, enjoy the ride and cruise.

Hey every job has it's side perks

I use the same line, no excuses I say. They always had bumped it down or out. But than again I don't look like a trouble maker, and keep my ride clean and stock looking.

Be sure to post up some pics when you get keys in hand.
