Gas Milage in Your SS/SC?

Hey I was just wondering what everyone is getting in their SS/SC's. Going up to school, it is about 80 miles, and it is all highway driving for the most part. I cruise at around 70ish mph. I recently got the car, it has 6700 miles on it. The first time I checked it, the computer said 30ish mpg but calculated I got 29.5. I thought that was pretty good for the power the car has. Then the 2nd time I checked it, I got about 26 mpg. The first time was mainly city driving. The 26 was my first time going up to school. I do have the NGK BRK7E spark plugs gapped at 0.040". I always shift before 3,000 rpms.. mainly around 2,750 or so. I also only have put in Sunoco 94 octane. I was just wondering if there was something maybe I can do to get a little better MPG or if that is pretty good. Thanks a lot guys/gals.

On a side note, man does the car pull hard with the stage 2, glad the car came with it!

I've seen as high as 40.4 mpg in mine, all highway. City/highway mix I usually see at least 28mpg, all city I usually see 26mpg or so. Typically I shift before 2500 and I'm pretty easy on the gas. I rarely cruise above 65.

Once you get above 60-65mph the mileage starts to drop dramatically.

Well then I guess I shouldnt complain with the milage I am getting then. That usually includes about 1 hard run on her too.. kinda hard not to... I didnt know if the 94 octane would have anything to do with it, I was gonna try a different brand of 93, just never did. Also, do you notice any like bucking or anything, mainly when pulling out.. low rpms in 1st or 2nd? It just seems every now and then it wants to do that. I notice it too when I just start it up, but I figured that was because it isnt warmed up yet, but it does it still even when its warm. I dunno, maybe its just my driving. Its when I shift low rpms pretty much, like 2500ish.

Well if you say it drops above 65 mph, that would make sense then I guess. When I am going up to school and back, I am always about 70. When I said I got the 26 mpg, going up I had the A/C on, girlfriend was in the car , I dont use the A/C hardly at all. So I figured that was why. I havent checked it yet, I will when I go back home to fill up. Computer right now says about 29 something.

I honestly dont drive the car hard. Like I said, on 1 tank full, I might run it to 6500 or so once. I guess I just need to run a full tank and not run about 3000 or so. That is when I normally shift, about 2500-3000. As for reving it... I know it has power, dont need to show it off...

On a side note, I do like how the GMPP Exhaust sounds, I am a fan.

I average around 25mpg that is with about 50% highway 50% city.

The "bucking" problem is common. I occasionally will get it when starting off too. I notice it most when starting off behind someone who is accelerating real slow, so i have to let the clutch out then kind of ease out the gas. I am sure it has something to do with the electronic throttle. There have been some TSBs with PCM upgrades to fix it, one was just fairly recently.

Yeah that is what I thought it might be, the fact that our cars have the flyby wire. I think that is what it is called. I just didnt know what else it would be. It gets kind of annoying sometimes. It makes me feel I cant drive the car. I have been driving stick since I was 15. I never even owned a auto. I thought the new plugs might have fixed that, but it still does it.

I get about 23 mpg, mostly highway driving. However, being a sports car, I don't care! I floor it all the time! What's the point of driving an SS/SC if you're going to granny shift?!

I dont see the point beating the crap out of it. I had my '98 z24 to 180k miles. I am gonna try to make her last! But none the less, I get a nice ricer beside me, then its game. I do have to admit, once that baby gets to about 6,000, damn she pulls hard.

I get this problem too, from what i see it is from valve deposits due to the aggressive fuel maps in the cobalts. I will try to run a cleaner through it soon and see if i get any positive results.

Well atleast it isnt just me then that notices it. Least it isnt something major. I just think it is crazy that the car has two times the HP at the wheels than my old z24, and gets about the same mpg.

I drive about 9 miles an hour above the speed limit all the time, 90% of the time I'm at 74 MPH on the freeway. I get 32 MPG if I can stay out of traffic.

I don't drive like an idiot driving around at a constant 4,000 RPM and flooring it so I can hurry up and slam on the breaks.

Too bad the Cobalt doesn't have the double overdrive my old SS had, cruising at 1500 rpms at 70 would get an easy 35MPG!

I average about 26 mpg, and that's usually grabbing 2nd gear. Now when my husband drives, I usually get about 19 mpg. He insists on driving it like he stole it. He is worst then me.

I get about 26 in mixed driving. That is by calculating it, I don't bother with the computer thing because I doubt it's terribly accurate. My driving style is mixed, spirited when I want to and normal driving most of the time.

Hmm unless my car is unlike everyone elses you are very wrong.

I drive about 3k miles a month, mostly highway. I have cruised at 75, 80, 85+ I have found that my gas mileage actually goes up, doesn't make much sense. Going 75 I get 29-30 and going 80-85+ mph I get 31.5. I usually get around 29 in the city also. In my opinion no matter what the speed the car gets consistent 29+mpg. Buy a radar detector and open her up.

Was your car stock? I was thinking that the stock tune must really lean out around 3k+ RPM, this is why the gas mileage goes up.

Yeah, that is what I was hoping would happen too. The rich stock tune would explain everyone having clogged cats. I wonder what type of mileage/performance a stock car with just a tune would get. I haven't heard of anyone doing that yet...maybe they just haven't document it yet.
