Ghost In Trunk
Ghost In Trunk
Can someone go into fuller detail about this Q/A:
Q: Do I have a ghost in my trunk?
A: Possibly, but it is more likely that the sound you are hearing is the trunk latch doing a self-test.
This happens to me and I thought it was just me.

pretty funny someone got into a fight because of it on this site. He was sitting in the car and it did the self-test and a guy with a soda was walking behind it with a soda and it scared the **** out of him and eh dropped his soda. Some one post a link to the thread.
It's more widely known as the "monkey in the trunk"
I believe it has something to do with a charcoal canister either with the fuel system or what vents our battery produced hydrogen out of the trunk

Ok GM has a bulletin for cobalts on this it is the EVAP vent valve running a cleaning and self test that creates a knock noise in the back this is normal
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
Shortly after cold starting the engine, 3-5 brief knock noises may be heard from the rear of vehicle that sounds like someone tapping on the rear window or quarter panel. This may be the result of the EVAP vent valve going through a normal diagnostic cleaning cycle.
Recommendation/Instructions:
If this concern is experienced and the noise is isolated to the EVAP vent valve, inspect the vent valve pipe to ensure that it is routed properly and not grounding out. If the pipe is routed properly, this noise should be considered a normal characteristic and no repairs should be performed.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
