GM's future Cobalt plans
This may or may not be old news by now, but General Motors is planning to introduce a new 1.4 liter turbo motor for the Cobalt line in the near future. The following excerpt is from the April issue of Motor Trend:
"The Chevy Cobalt gets a moderate facelift by mid-2009 for the 2010 model year, and a 1.4 liter turbo engine for tightened CAFE purposes about the same time. The turbo will be based on an existing engine used in Europe. An all-new compact Chevy will replace the current Cobalt for the 2013 model year."
This news makes one wonder if the new 1.4 would replace any of the current powertrain offerings (2.2 perhaps?), but I would go out on a limb and say that we can probably expect GM to offer the new corporate six-speed auto with the new model, if not sooner.

The 1.4L Turbo is like 160hp. Plus it's lighter and more fuel efficient. I don't think it will hurt the car's performance any... but I bet it will hurt sales.
Lotsa folks don't want boosted engines b/c of the requirement for premium gas.

LSJ is a pretty dirty engine, but the LNF is much cleaner, with a lot more research going into it. I can see that 1.4 being a midrange engine choice, slotting between, say, the Astra offering and the LNF, should they continue making it. All speculation my part, though.
hmm i thought the cobalt was to be redesigned for 2010 on the delta 2 platform... not 2013....
regardless, i think it would be a good thing if cobalt production was outsourced to mexico. Ill probably get flamed for this, but I traded in my cobalt for an HHR, which is made in mexico... and it feels alot more "refined" and has alot less rattles than my cobalt......even though theyre on the same platform...
the only difference is hhr is made in mexico, while the cobalt is made in the good ol USA.... which explains the low build quality IMO.
i want to trade in my hhr for the next gen cobalt... but i really hope they improve it.. if not i guess ill just end up getting a base model camaro.. provided its not out of my pricerange
