Got a trade in quote. Ouch!

$14,500!

Yeah, I obviously didn't even consider that. I paid like $23,000 8 months ago. My car is an 06, with 16,000 miles, G85, onstar, XM radio, extra airbags and sunroof. Pretty much everything.

So I did some research on autotrader, and in my area for an 06, the average going price of an SS/SC is over 19,000. Nice to know the private market isn't too bad should I need options. But I plan on keeping the car for a while now, so no worrys.

The dealership is always gonna rip you on a trade in. You are always better off selling the car. You usually have to wait 2 years until you can expect to sell the car and make anything back.

My dealer could not explain this to me but he told me "that the resale on a loaded ss/na can be better than the ss/sc" why might be due to stereotypes and how certain trim levels of cars are treated or lackof

They are better but still far off, they need to establish their quality reputation for better resale and that might take awhile yet

Hmm. I looked at traideing mine in whne I started haveing clutch problems. I was looking at geting a Ford mustang GT and they where going to give me 21,000 for mine. That was with 5K on it and some of the mods went with the car, Wheels, stage 2, catt back, and shifter.

I usually trade vehicles quite often and before there were any established information out there dealerships would tell me some of the lowest numbers ever.

Some said that they could give me $14,500 others $15,000.

Now that they understand the market for a SS/SC and since there is published values I can go pretty much anywhere and see $17,000 minimum trade-in, and 80% of the dealers are above that.

I am looking at this as well right now. I am fed up with this car and I plan to get rid of it soon. Just too many dislikes for a new car, you know. I will wait at least until the Mazdaspeed 3 comes out to see if it is any good, but I will be shopping around in the meantime. I checked KBB today and for the miles estimated to be on my car at the time of trade in (a month or two at least (5000-5500miles)) the "excellent" trade in value was $20,575 and the "good" was $19,430. I owe a few thousand more than that, but I make at least an extra grand a month that I could put back or pay on the car. I just hope the dealers will actually give me these trade in values, because I don't want to have to go upside-down on another car. Luckily, I remembered yesterday to go to the dealer and cancel my extended warranty, so that should knock off about $500-$600 from my pay off ammount. I also was able to get the car with 0% and GM supplier discount which helped me a lot, but the negative equity of my previous car is what hurt me the most.

I have yet to check what the trade in value of my car is, but I imagine it should be decent. Car is an 05 SS/SC with 6,250 miles on it now. Im considering trading to a 05/06 GTO. Think Im actually going to go visit a dealer today after classes.....

Check KBB so you at least have an idea on where you are at. Otherwise they will try and screw you, I know, because they have tried it before with me. Good luck with looking for a GTO. I love those cars, but it might be a bit too much for me right now. Actually, it wouldn't be, but I like to stay well below my limit so that there is extra money for emergencies, saving, and modding.

saturated market

face it folks, very few cars hold their value.... look at some of those $50,000 to $80,000 european cars that are worth 50% of their cost (new) after just 2-3 years. The market is saturated w/ cars. That's why I am interested in production figures for our SC's.... a rare (low production) car will be worth tons more than a mass produced car. I figure if we keep the SC's a minimumn of 3 years they should still be worth 15-17K even w/ some miles on them.
The problem is new technology... for example the MAZDASPEED 3 w/ all those killer specs,
who would want our used SC's (unless someone truly wanted a low production balt).
I figure the SC's are one of the "american muscle cars" of today and down the road might command big $$$$ like the muscle cars of the 60's and early 70's get now.
Buy the car to enjoy.... and you will get the most for your $$$$

enjoy!

I just got my cobalt ss/sc 4 months ago and just barely broke 2500 miles on and checked the trade in value of my car and it gave me with dealer trade in $20,100.00 Plus its in excellent condition, waxed and not even a drink in the car. I'm really thinking about trading it in but i'll be looking in about a years time and not driving it much at all. Fun car, but i want a turbo. hehee

yeah you can't expect the dealership to give you back even close to what you paid...always better to sell it in the private market when you consider selling something. But selling after only 8 months is a bad move...once you drive off the lot you loose 15-20% of its value...you might as well drive it for 2-3 years so your not taking that big of a hit.

Trade it for a 1990 or 1991 ZR1 corvette. Those are in the $20,000 range, and are a lot more rare..... :P

The dealership isn't ripping anyone off, they don't have to post ads in the paper, they don't have to entertain countless calls and potential buyers that wanna drive your car with no intention to buy. The dealer has to refrub and detail the car, do inspections, put on new tires (no way the stock tires are ok after 19k, which are like 1000 bux). Plus they have to make money on it and pay the people involved.

Oh and this has nothing to do with 2.0 tech

2.0 tech != any remote post about the ss/sc

this is true. the dealer is taking a HUGE risk when they do trade-ins. it's not like they do a full diagnostice and full inspection when you trade it in while you are there. they have no idea if you have abused it or not. they will spend thousands on replacing worn out parts that need replacing. i lucked out getting $17k for my rsx. got it in 03 and had it for over 2.5 years and put around 30k miles. car had some scrathches, dings, tire wear, clutch wear, etc.

It is true that the dealerships take a risk on trade-ins. However on a trade-in that is still under warranty they risk nothing. They can write off any work that is needed as warranty work and bill GM for it. I know how it works, so don't try and say the dealerships get nothing when doing warranty work. They may not MAKE any money for warranty work, but GM reimburses the dealership for the man hours used for warranty work.
