Heat Sheild?

So I'm trying to figure out what the hell this black pad that's attached to my firewall does?

Its the huge foam pad covering the firewall at the back of the engine bay. The reason i ask, is because the whitfield racing cobalt doesnt have it on their car, and I think it looks better without it, so I kinda want to tear mine out, I dont care if the engine makes more noise inside the car, I'm just working on cleaning up the engine bay for show.

Any Ideas?

You remember the pad on the underside of the hood? EXACT same thing. Just used to quite down the engine noise in the interior

it's mostly for sound barrier thats one reason they push these cars as "quiet ride" or what ever term the sales people use

Alrighty then, that **** is gettin torn out whenever i get a chance, it looks much cleaner without it.

I'll also be replacing all of my wire loom with red wire loom, and i'm changing all black rubber hoses to red silicone hoses

Theres not many actuall hoses because I want to switch mine to all mine to blue or stainless, but all i've seen are the autozone rice stainless hoses and conduit and I dont want to pay an arm and a leg for it.

If you look at the Whitfield Racing Cobalt, the engine bay looks alot cleaner without it

HackAbuse,

Please consider reconnecting your PCV tube back into your Injen intake. The crankcase is where the cylinder blow-by goes -- it is a fuel-rich mixture that is best returned into the intake via the intake tube for 2 reasons: 1) you burn the fuel/air mixture helping with your fuel economy and 2) It is the factory's way of taking care of the engine-produced explosive mixture and keeping it from being dissapated into the air. A nice red silicone tube will look like it belongs there.

The air breather is fine, its actually getting a little bit cleaner air with less restriction like that. Its not hurting anything

I just used the breather because I'm going to use that opening on the intake for a clean nitrous install when the kit finds its way into my engine

Air doesn't go in the filter, fumes come out of the filter. Every engine has blow-by, especially when you get "on it". Blow-by is exhaust gas and unburnt fuel that gets past the cylinder rings and into the crankcase. The PCV scavenges/evacuates this air and runs it into the intake to be reburned.

Wouldnt cylinder rings leaking be a bad thing?

If its actually flowing out and not in, why should i need a filter?

I always thought that it was a vent for the oil on the topside of the engine so it wouldnt build up pressure or a vacum, and stay at outside pressure

No such thing as a perfect sealing ring. It is normal for there to be some leakage. PCV -- Positive Crankcase Ventilation -- removes the gases from the crankcase and reuses them.

Bringing this back up, I removed mine today and it looks good.

Theres only really 2 clips that screw off and then you give her hell and pull. Just dont break anything that sits back there. Theres no way to do it to not rip it, so its more of a "do it one or dont do it at all" "mod".

And it does look a lot better!

I havent driven it. I'm technically sick. But once I do I can let you know. It did clean it up more.

P.s. when you take it out its full of fiberglass insulation, and it will definetly get on you.

There's no doubt it looks cleaner. Plus looks good with your yellow painted covers.

Nice touch.

Yea, but that one cover looks like crap, I never got to finish it.

I'm working on sanding the valve cover, which looks good in the pictures, haha

Man, you just copy everything I do, dontcha?

Sound difference?

I have a Injen Shortram, and everytime I hit the gas, even a little bit, you can hear the air being sucked into it. It sounds like a vacum cleaner almost.

It really evens out the sound of the exhaust in the cabin

Two words

Sand Paper

You cant just polish it with some fancy cream, you have to grind the **** out of the aluminum to get the nicer, shinier aluminum underneath to show

Then you use the cream to finish the deal
