Heel and Toe Explained

http://www.motivemagazine.com/pub/fe...shifting.shtml

Once you learn to do the basics of shifting and then learn how to rev match (without braking) for a down shift, you are ready to learn heel and toe shifting. It combines simultaneous braking and rev matching for down shifts. Consider it mandatory for road course work.

i'm starting to try this. don't have it down 100%, but i'm getting there i only try to do it when no one's around so i don't look like a total ass. takes some getting used to.

I can get the shift ok, but I still step on the brake too hard when i do it sometimes.

also, i find it works best if you don't think about it so much. i get confused when i really try to think about what i'm doing, and do it best when NOT thinking about it.

guess it just comes with practice. i've only had my 2.0 for about a month, so still working on it. i always knew how to drive a manual, but was so out of practice since my last few cars were auto's.

I could do this in my old car.
I find the cobalt's gas pedal is too far forward to properly do it. I prefer side stepping in the Cobalt...

i always considered myself decent at this until my friend rev matches like it was nothing. Revs it and downshifts and cant even tell besides the engine noise.

Yeah the pedals in the Cobalt make it impossible to do properly. I even had my instructor try it and he was a pro racer for close to 50 years. He couldn't do it either, so I didn't feel so dumb. I'm going to have the pedals modified to move the position of the gas pedal a lil bit more even with the brake.

I normally just cover the brake and the throttle and rock my foot to the right while holding the constant pressure on the brake, I have only been able to do a proper heel toe in other peoples cars when the pedals are too far apart. I think the Cobalts pedals are perfect unless I am wearing my Puma Speed cats which are pretty narrow.

Edit: I just looked at the site up there and thats the way I have been doing it since I got my Z24 in 2000.

It's when your braking with most of the left side of your foot, and you roll the right side on to the gas and give it a blip. With how close the pedals are, it works great!
Basically what SoloZ/SS said he does.

Make sure you try it when there is nobody around you. Because I guarntee when you FIRST try it you will SLAM on the breaks.

I physically can't reach, but that's due to small feet. Like I said the guy who's my racing instructor can modify the pedals for me to make it a little more doable so I'll try it again one of these days.

I would take it slow. Dont crazy first learning. When you first try it for like the first week you will either add too much throttle or too much breaks. So you dont want that going around turns when you are first learning.

I was saying that so you don't try it on sharp country roads. Just looking out for a fellow member. Oh and If you want to see some excellent heal toe watch the Japanese drivers with the video camera on their footwork. It's ridiculous.
