Horrible Orange Peel in Brand new 06' SS/SC

So my local dealer got in a brand new Black 06' SS/SC in so I decided to go check it out and compare it to mine. Let me tell you, half of the passengers side door and the front passenger quarter panel, my lord the orange peel was disgusting! I cant believe the paint jobs are of such poor quality. I really lucked out with mine, NO orange peel at all, but I do have alot of metallic flecks on the trunk area/back of trunk. Looks almost like they ran out of paint!

are certain colors having more issues than others ?

My Arrival Blue 06 SS S/C is well painted. zero complaints from myself and my dad looked it over a lot and is very impressed (he's a big car buff, somewhat of a perfectionist, and has built and painted several vehicles himself over the years).
there is some orange peel throughout, but evenly and only noticed when you look close with reflections.
I give it a 9 out of 10 or something.

Mine seems similar(Arrival Blue). There is orange peel, but does seem even and again is only noticable if you really pay attention to the reflection.

It's when the paint looks like an orange peel. Bumpy and stuff.

Caused by shitty prep and not enough wet sanding

Actually most orange peel is caused during painting.

Yeah, it's all about application, temps, pressures, etc since there is no wet sanding or prep in a plant. The body is dunked and there you go. Afterwards, there is the rest of the body shop that may touch up areas.

My black '06 SS/SC had orange peel on the driver's side front fender. It was repainted for free under warranty, but it does make me nervous that the paint is that poor.

This is a continuing subject on the Corvette Forum where the paint jobs used for comparison are Mercedes SLC etc. Technicians post detailed explanations for the quality difference, but it all comes down to the nature of the solvents used. Factory paint in Europe uses solvents banned by EPA for factory painting in the USA. I am told but do not know that paint shops do not have to abide by the same rules. And some new Corvette owners have posted they have taken their new car straight to a top flight local shop and for several thousand dollars gotten a paint job that rivals that on a Ferrari. I do know that when Autometrics did the RK Sport SS Hood for my Cavalier the result was so close to perfect that when pumping gas people nearby asked if the hood was the newest option. laborsmith

most new cars have some orange peel. Mine has a bit on it - even the brand new vettes have some. I was comparing the paint to mine. If I was paying that much for a car I would want a better paint job, but I am not gonna get too picky over mine.
Depends on the color too. The black will show the imperfections a lot more than say a white car.

No complaints here. However, I noticed that fine scratches show up easy on this colour and I thought black was hard to keep clean!!!

I just came back from the dealership, and my 06 black ss has ALOT of orange peel like it looks horrible in the sun, bumps everywhere except the roof and hood and is especially apparent on the doors and the rear.

I'm supposed to take delivery this Friday and am not sure exactly what to do, should I have them repaint it? or can you reduce the orange peel if you just get it wet sanded?

Will try to post pics if I can go take some before the sun sets

No! Wet sanding is prior to painting. Don' try that, it'll only make a mess. Show it to the dealer before you sign for the car. I'm sure they'll help get it fixed if its that bad.

My ss/sc is Arrival Blue and I also have alittle orange peel, but most Chevys do. What I am concerned about is on the inside of my passangers door in the door-jam area the paint is off color. Looks like it was missed after the first coat.

Get them to wet sand and polish it!
Thats what my dealership did for me..............Looks sweet now!

Won`t get rid of all the "oarange peel". But will certainly help.
Mine was done because of hard water stains/etching.

yes, it is. It's too big, so I've cut it down, and used both of their shots in my signature.

It's a cool pic, I like it!

They also took this one:

Nobody has said anything about red. My Red SS/SC is so perfectly painted that it's like a mirror almost. I didn't wash it for about 6 days and people were asking me if I just washed it!!!!!!
The dealer waxed it all up before I got it and whatever they used was also on the windows. I could drive through a heavy downpour of rain and not even have to put on the wipers!!!!!!!!!
