How to check timing chain..

So I've been reading up on how to check if the timing chain is a tooth off or not. I get tons of mixed opinions. My sisters 07 2.2L is making some head noise.. The chain seems firm and tight, but I want to make sure it didn't just a tooth possibly. How is this done?
