i let it go to about 500-600 miles before i really whomped on it. Of coarse your so damn temped at first, so i did a couple of second gear runs. But try to take it easy for a lil. All in all, once you do your first oil change, you'll be all set.

But on the other side of it...
If you are more comfortable with following the owners manual or your own break in process... Do that ! It's your car... do whatever you want with it. If you think that 2000 miles is a good break-in period... and you're confident about it...
Go for it.
I agree with ekhondaman, when i got my car it had 150 miles on. 30 miles was driving from where i ordered it to the dealership. What about the other 120 miles? Well i tell you that i after i bought my car, i found out that my friend had actaully test drove the same one i bought because i thought him the dealership it came from and they ony had one. He told me that when they went to test drive it, that the chevy dealership guy was barking tires all over the place! Then they let him drive and he doesnt even know how to drive a 5-speed!!! I was so pissed.
I waited about 500 like your supossed too after that your just babieing it!
I've built a few moters and broke in a few new cars 500 is plenty for the ring to seat. that the big worry in my mind well... every thing to get the in tune, what most people don't do is drive their cars and let them warm up! that sittin in the driveway lettin it idle BS is just that BS let it warm while drivin is the best ( under 40 mph) if your letting it idle, is the tranny fluid warned up? nope your in neutral, or you have the clutch pushed in. so that fluid is not warmed yet. also if its a rear drive car ( or AWD) the axle fliud is not warmed up yet .
Anyway I'm a car abuser no question! I get on it when and where i feel so inclined. as most people do! sorry hardcore car freaks baby your **** and load it up , get carbon composiites and such! have fun! whatever!

One solution to getting your car with as few miles as possible on it is to order direct form the factory. Sure it takes about 2 months to get your car (LT coupe) but it'll have about 5 - 10 miles on it when you take delivery.
This is what I did... ONLY TWO MORE WEEKS!

I'll also be ******* the ever living crap out of the motor once its warmed up. Not redline necessarily, but generous throttle.

i slowly started pushing it after 50k, not up to redline but up to 5000 then i would let the engine coast down to about 1500, then id do it again, did this a couple times to seal the rings up nice and good.
