Good thinking.

Thats exactly what I'm going to be doing. The more money you can put down up front, the lower your payments will be each month and the shorter your loan term will be.

There is, however, one circumstance when you don't want to put down a large downpayment. That is if you have the money in a fund where it would be earning a higher percentage than the interest rate on the loan would be. In that case, it is beneficial to finance as much as possible, since it would end up being a better deal in the long run

I have owned 27 different cars since I was 16 so a down payment for me was money thrown away.

I am just saying that I never put money down because I didn't have some of my cars long enough to benifit more from a lower payment than money in my pocket.

In just got financed for my cobalt and i put nothing down with no credit, and no co signer. I guess the gm banks really want to get rid of all the 05's because of the gm discount they have going on. Im paying 350 a month also at 11% i beleive since im a first time buyer as well. I decided to get a cobalt b/c i could not get financed for a 05 srt-4 so i got a cobalt so i can build credit. Im hoping tho they will create some good mods for this car I grown attached to it also.

holy hell...getting raped on the interest. Did you finance through the dealer or a bank/credit union.

From the GM finance bank, But im also considered a High risk, for one im a first time buyer with no credit, not bad credit, and they talked to my insurence provider and seen i had 2 duis in my past and blah blah blah. Its all good tho i make good money for my age i guess is what they say.

umm two dui's? and you still have a license. Quite shocked actually. How old are you again?

Anyways, back to the topic at hand. Just think of it this way. For every $1,000 your putting down your only knocking the payment down $10 more a month. Honestly, I won't be saving too much. Save like $2-3k and use that as a down payment. It doesn't really help much putting a down payment down. I put $1,500 down and had GMS but only got the payments reduced by like $20 more a month.

Gas money perhaps? Yes. Worth it? Not really. Instead of paying $430 I pay $410 a month. Wow....

Moral of the story, pocket some of your down payment and use the rest. Don't put a big down payment on your car. Not worth it. Especially if you lease. Just a waste of Money.

I pay $350 a month for six years at 3% through gmac. No money down, but had the negative equity of 6 grand. Thats what happens when you buy a car every 9 months-to a year. But have a kid on the way so keeping this one for the wife.

I think its worth the down payment. my payment a month prob going to be aroung 190.00 a month if i got the cobalt ss if i get the xtreme my payments going to be 208.00 a month why is the cobalt cheaper then the xtreme?. i payment calculator on chevy web site. i can get the crew cab xtreme at 23,000 and the cobalt ss/sc 21,000 i be ready in december to buy a car.

I put 20,000$ CDN down, and I have to pay 300$/Month for 3 years, with 0%. The car was 32,000$ CDN with the taxes.

The "CDN" after 32,000 stands for Canadien. It was 32,000 Canadien.

I agree with you 100%, not only does American $$ sound better, IT IS BETTER!!!!
Anyway, I have to say that us Canadians are pretty fortunate these days because Cobalt SS/SC should be going for $27,700 based on today's exchange rates ($21,995 USD x 1.26), but we're only paying $24,995 MSRP. Also, if you go to CarCostCanada.com, you will be able to get dealer invoice cost. Without this info I would have to pay full MSRP becuase these cars are so hard to get north the border. I ended paying only $1800 CDN over invoice which is about $1200 off MSRP...unheard of with the SS/SC!!!

I put $11,000 down CDN on the LS coupe, which being fully loaded came to about $26,500. My payments are $271/month over 5 years, I decided to pay more interest and have more money leftover every month (gogo insurance cause I'm only 22 ) to put into enhancements, service, partying etc. .
