I just joined the family!

Hey folks,

I've been hanging around here for about a month, and now I get to announce that I've finally joined you all! I just bought my 2006 Cobalt SS/SC yesterday!

I bought at Bob Stall Chevrolet in La Mesa, California (free plug for them) and my only options are G85 and XM.

Now, without further delay, some pictures!

I'll get some more professional looking pictures sometime this weekend when I get the chance. I've been busy driving and fiddling with XM.

One question for now, does anybody know what this thing below my steering wheel is?

See you all out on the road!

hmm.. I'm almost postive I don't have that there... I've removed that panel before, and the only wire the left it hanging was the one for the trunk release...

Maybe the dealer put a self-destruct unit in there. Or an eject-o seat-o.

That would be bad, since I don't have a sun roof!

actually looks more like the place to check for CEL's an what not. I remember back in the day when you would use a paperclip and push into the plug type thingy and count the number of times your service engine light would flash then look it up...damn, not anymore

See you all out on the road!

You guys are all funny. How many posts is it going to take to let him know that is his PS2 paddle hook up and all he needs now is the DVD Screen through GM Performance Parts which is free! come guys, be a little more friendly with the new guys and stop teasing them plus with holding information.

nice car. If you want some real tips PM me once and awhile. I will give you the truth as I know it..... going forward......past this point...... wont be pulling your wire.

I also at first thought it might be the OBDII port that connects to the car's computer, but there's another connector to the left of it right alongside the driver's side door that I think fulfills that purpose. My current guess is that it is some kind of dealer installed security option/accessory (perhaps an ignition cut-off?). That would at least explain why nobody seems to know what it is.

Oh, and thanks for the congratulations, everyone.

Congrats! Glad there are some new owners now that every one seems to be selling theirs.

I would ask the dealer what it is. I was thinking OBDII but that is normally on the left and further under the dash.

Usually devices like those are car installed radar. The red light lights up when it detects a radar signal from a radar gun. The connector is for a unit to put another light in a more viewable area but since they are illegal in some states they put the primary one in an inconspicuous location.

Nice car you got the best color As for that port I have no idea but it would creep me out to have one seeing it might be some sort of black box, tracking, shut off.

Your right Justinian, it is not an obdII port the black one closer to the drivers door is. I have used it to access the PCM already. Ignition cutoff is a good theory but i doubt it since the car has been equipped with PassLockIII. I would like to see more pin and plug configuration. side front top and angle view would be helpful or better yet ask the dealer. If they dont know then you should find another dealer who does. then go back to them for your servicing cause they know something about your car.

Alright folks, I pledge to find out whatever the heck that thing is. First order of business tomorrow is to look at it more closely and see if I can remove it myself. If there's no obvious way to remove it, then I'm taking it in to the dealer to have them look at it, tell me what it is, and then probably remove it. It's certainly not factory, and if it's nothing helpful I would just as soon have it out.
