insurance question

i really want to get the ss s/c and have been looking at what it cost to insure one

the best deals i can find are around 1800$ for 6 months with deccent coverage i am 17 and will be 18 when i get the car but doubt that will take much off.

i was just wondering how much you guys pay, through what company, and how old you are just so i can get an idea.

im willing to pay $1800 but thats still alot of money to pay for insurance IMO

Got good news and bad news, the bad news is I'm 30, the good news it I saved a bunch on my car insurance by switching to Geico. Paying $1,920/ year, no points, but in NJ, for full coverage.

I'll be 21 in 2 weeks and pay around $200 a month in the auto theft capitol of Phoenix. That's with a lot of discounts though. My parent are insured through the same agent and have clean records, as do I, so I get the benefit of "being a good driver", plus drivers ed. and good student. Good luck.

Just be sure not to get any tickets for anything or cause any accidents. Your insurance will sky rocket. One of my friends was paying like $300 a month for liability on an 86 IROC.

$1800 for 11 insurance points but no points on my license as of July, insurance points drop next year. After that it's $700 for 6 months. When I hit 25 that August it will be $550.

ok you have to have 2 cars (one the cobalt SS S/c) another with the cheapest rate you can get, go buy a 200 junker with a 4cylander no performance engine, insure teh junker under your name with you as the primary driver on it. then have your parents insure your cobalt as their car with it labeled as a pleasure driving car.

I agree there. Thats probably how your gonna get it the cheapest. Mine is around 350 a month. I'm a 20 year old male though, and I guess I'm used to bending over for my insurance. I'd try to find as many discounts as you can with whoever you go through. And even after you pick a company, make sure your agent it good too. My brother's car got backed into, and the insurance agent we had want him to pay the deductable and all this other crap, when you don't have to in that case. Took over a month to get the car fixed. My mom's Truck got backed into about 2 weeks later, the person that hit her had AAA. They were on the phone the next day asking my mother who she wanted it fixed by.
Luckly the week before my Cavy was totaled, we switched agents, and wow what a difference. They're telling me about all these discounts that I didn't even know about before. State Farm has a Steer Clear program(ask about it if you get SF) that you can apply for if your ticket and accident free (the other car ran a red light when my cavy was totaled, so that doesn't cout). It's gonna save me a ton of money. That, moving away from Detroit, and getting better grades should lower my monthy payment to only 200 something a month.

All in all, shop around with companies, and then shop around with agents.

yeah, let your parents know that you are putting down thier adress for insurance.
I'm living at home till i graduate, so all the cars that my mom own I have to be insurred under; even though i have my own car, even if i bought my own car and its in my name.
My parent are doing this loop hole thing for me. My car is a 98 cavalier sedan no thrills. The car I'm registered as a primary car is a luxury 95 astro conversion van that we used for road trips back in the day. Its cheaper to insure me under a huge luxury van with a v6 and half the milage than it is to insure me under my own car. The ironic part is my car is only worth 1,500, but the van can sell for at least 6,000.
So that is how to beat the system, kind of a loop hole i guess.
for best results i would get a sedan that is 10 years old, since age has a lot to do with it...

I am paying 840 a year too!!!! Here's how i did it. You dont have to buy a car like bdwarr6 said. You use your parents car. But say concept. Here's what you do xskier874.......

Ok my dad has a 91 little 4cyl nissan truck that he drives everyday. I have a 05 sc/ss. I have Alfa insurance by the way. What i did was i told the insurance company that my dad was the PRIMARY driver of my cobalt and i was the SECONDARY driver. Then i told them that i was the PRIMARY driver of the nissan truck and my dad was the SECONDARY driver. That way both people can drive either vehicle they what, and if tyou get in a wreck, both of you will be covered. I am paying $70 a month for full coverage. My dads record id clean too. I hope this helps. NOT all insurance companys will let you do this either

Crappy part is, I just got a speeding ticket, so my insurance is probably going to go up several hundred dollars a year now.

edit: just remembered, I even have driver training. Such a rip off.
How on earth did you get away with no collision on a new car??? (unless you don't have a new car i s'pose)

Otherwise pretty much since your 18, have a sports car, and you only have a small clean record with your insurance people you are USCWAP. Have you had insurance of your own (not parental assistance) since you got your licence? Thats huge money to drive!

You know it's considered fraud if you have insurance in someone elses name in order to get a lower rate.

I'm 18 with my Cobalt SC rated as a "pleasure car" and I pay about $468 every 6 months.

Here's a tip for keeping your insurance low. When you get pulled over and you aren't acting like a complete dick to the cop, ask him he he will write SP8 somewhere on the ticket. The county clerk see's that and doesn't report it to your insurance. But if the cop doesn't know what it is, he usually wont.

If you get a ticket and are convicted it goes on your DMV record, there is no way around that. If you get a ticket in another state it goes on your home states record, points might not, depends on the states involved. Another thing is the court doesn't decide how many points a charge/conviction is worth the DMV assess points. The court just reports the charge you are convicted off.

Also your driving record is a perm. you get a ticket 15 years ago it on your record for life. Point get expunged, convictions do not.

Insurance companies might only do a 3 year pull of your DMV record. Hence the three year record of convictions you hear people talking about with the insurance companies.

When you get insurance the insurance company pulls your driving record from the DMV. There is no direct reporting to the insurance companys by any gov't entity.

There is nothing a cop can write on your ticket to prevent it from getting reported to the DMV.

Doing the primary driver swap to get better insurance rates is called fraud. Thanx for making my rates higher cause your too cheap to pay your own way.

well like i said ill be 18 when i get the car i have one ticket for "disobeying a traffic device" haha actually i was doing 88 in a 65 and the cop was nice and let me off somewhat ez. not really sure how you can run a red light on the highway though.

anyways the cheapest i can find is around 800$ for 6 months with almost no coverage and with devent coverage depending on the deductable its from 1500-2000$ im getting the car either way its just bs they want that much for coverage.

thanks for all the help and ill let you know how it goes when i get my car.

There is no way that i am not going to get anything but full coverage. So I mean I can pay the $2002 for 6 months through State Farm but my car payment is 400 and I got a 70 phone bill also. I am only going to have $80 a month for gas and to do whatever I want. So I need to kno if anytone knows a place that is cheaper.
