Interior dimmer

So I decided to mess with the interior dimmer the other day, and quickly came to enjoy having it turned down all the way, especially at night - its less obtrusive and generally enjoyable with out the bright light in your face all the time.

I left it turned down, but after an hour or two of driving...it did it for the first time, where the lights all came on full brightness, and the dimmer was all the way down. turning it up and down, lights on and off, etc. - did nothing. eventually - maybe 5 mins later...they went back to behave according to the dimmer.

Its done this countless times since and I have no idea why and i cannot find any pattern to it...

any ideas? haha

Thanks!

2007 ls for what its worth!

The instrument lights are controlled by the computer, the dimmer only sets how bright they are when the computer gives you control. you cant control when they come on or go off.

I run mine with the line on the knob at about 10:30, I have to tape over my highbeam indicator though, it annoys the living **** out of me

Iv been running my interior lights just a hair above all the way down. I like driving around at night in that like stealth mode. It actually helps you focus on the road more for you safety ****, but personally I just like the look of the dim lights.

So how is your depth perception with those NVG's on?

You must wreck into everything

not sure exactly what your saying but i do know, when i removed my dimmer switch from the dash to paint the trim, it seperated into two, and created a small short in it. Had to buy a new one from gm for like 20 bucks.

hey, thanks for the replies everyone haha. I agree, its annoying at night and i prefer the stealth mode haha. the high beam light never bothered when everything else was bright but it does drive me nuts when the dimmer cooperates now haha

what you're describing makes sense maven - i figured it was just a weird sensor control or computer thing....but is there any rhyme to the reason? it seems so sporadic how it does it haha

if anyone knows thatd be cool..if not, ill just live with it

It's the auto headlight system....if it thinks it is bright enough outside, it runs the dash lighting at full brightness. Put something over the sensor (little dome thing straight in front of the driver at the base of the windshield) that will block the light. BCM will think it is night all the time and your dimmer will have authority. Of course this means your auto lights will be on all the time. Lucky for you the US market cars allow you to turn them off....unlike our Canadian market cars....grrrrrrr.

so thats what that stupid thing is? haha - thanks. I figured there was a sensor somewhere but didn't know where it would be.

I prefer lights on all the time anyway...better visibility for other drivers. My parents had an issue once where one of them got hit and the other guy claims her lights were off even though they werent blah blah blah. I always turned them on manually on my ole trusty 92 lumina haha.

I suppose I'll have to find something that doesnt look to junky to keep there lol.

thanks again.
