Just got my 1st ticket.
Just got my 1st ticket.
Stupid unmarked cop cars. Laser got me doing 80 in a 55. My first ticket EVER since I started driving at 16 and i'm 22 now. What should I do? Plead not guilty and try to have them reduce it?
yeah....

Laser Gun Defenses
Laser speed guns used by police can measure distance and calculate speed by comparing the change in distance against a specific span of time. Fighting a laser gun speeding ticket is more difficult, as its harder to claim the gun was measuring some object other than your vehicle.

Thanks guys. I'll pay whatever they want me to, even a grand. Just so long as I dont get any points on my license. I don't want my insurance to go up. I only pay 97 a month but I dont want it to get worse. I plan on getting a considerably faster car in the near future. I usually dont speed I just wasnt paying ANY attention to what I was doing.
Any suggestions on a good radar detector? I was looking at a Valentine One.

pay a lawyer and learn a lesson. i got "lasered" doing 11 over once, with cruise control set at 65 in a 65 while a guy in a white taurus was passing me doing 75-80. but since i had a red sports car at the time, i got the ticket. theyre impossible to fight too. i'd get a lawyer.

Try to get school if it is your first time other wise DON'T DO THE CRIME IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DO THE TIME

I just had court today for Driving While Suspended and Speeding. The offer right now is at 18mo court supervision and 40 hrs community service, however the lawyer said he had just gotten the police report and info today. Therefore he asked for a continuance so he could talk to me. I will still get my license back on time(Christmas Day) since violations don't goto the Secretary of State until you are convicted.
In all I wish you luck. Once your in the system it's hard to get out...
Edit: If you can't get a lawyer, ask for court supervision and/or Traffic School. Court Supervision is where you can not get any violations for a set time, if you don't get any violations in that time the case will be dismissed. Traffic School is an 8hr course, if you attend the offense will be kept from going on your record.
i have good experience in this area.
you have a few options, since this is your first ticket , best ideas first:
1. go in, plead no contest(i cant explain what it means, its pretty much like a guilty plea)
if you were doing what you got the ticket for dont plead not guilty lol. plead no contest and ask them if you can do defensive driving for it. ticket stays off your record, you pay a fee, and pay for defensive driving, but when you finish get a copy saying you finished DD and your insurance goes down!! +1 but FIRST go talk to the court clerks first. see what your laws are for DD because i know they are different in certain states. usually you wont have to go in for your court date to ask to do that, just talk to the clerks. its embarassing being in the court room
2.find a lawyer that does criminal law, give them the ticket and pay them and they will get you on a type of probation, from 30-90 days and you have to not get a ticket during that period. they lower the fine too, but you still have to pay it and court cost. lawyer goes to court for you and pleads guilty, but it doesnt go on your record. cool part is usually you dont hear back from the lawyer from up to 6 months.
3. suck it up and do like i shouldnt have done on my first ticket and just go to court, pay the fine and have it go on your record.

here in my state you can only do defensive driving once a year, i've done it 2 times lol. i have the shittyest luck in getting tickets, wrong place at the wrong time type of stuff. trying to pass someone thats going 45 in a 60 which made me go above 60 so he happened to clock me right as i passed the slow guy. i've payed a lawyer about 6 times..hahah!! so far only 1 ticket on my record

As for the OP...look into your options as they vary by state. In PA you can't plead nolo contendre (no contest). It's either guilty or not guilty. Your best bet might be to plead not guilty and see what they'll do for you in court. About 2 years ago I got a completely bogus ticket. Cop was driving a half mile in front of me, in traffic - fairly heavy traffic - but still claimed to have watched me in his rear view mirror for 7 miles passing cars like it was no tomorrow (even though I was passed by 2x as many cars as what I passed). When he pulled me over he said if he had to put down my speed (no, really? you have to do that on a ticket?!) he'd guess 76mph. I had cruise set at 62mph.
When at court, the cop asked me what I wanted, I said if he'd settle for base fine for going 62mph and no points, I'd accept. They're usually willing to work with you, plus as a bonus if the cop doesn't show it can get thrown out depending on the judge. If traffic school is an option, ALWAYS go for that. It will erase the infraction and usually LOWER your insurance at the same time.
wow

A radar detector that has laser detection abilities is useless to you. A laser device is instantaneous. The cop pulls the trigger with the sight on your car and bam you're done. The only defense was that you'd be too far away, but you have no idea how far away you were at the time.
Go to court though. At least showing up can help you some. The cop may not even show, so you might get off.
