keyless and regular key

I've bought a charged 2005 cobalt ss. The car dealer kinda screw me with the keys. I have no spare regular key and he told me the keyless remote wasn't working when I was ready to buy it. Funny thing as it worked just fine first time I took the car for a spin. But anyway, I have to buy a spare key and a remote and I have some questions.

I've heard the regular key has some kind of chip in it. Is this right? I've also heard the opposite for the 2005. I don't think gm would make different keys for the same model and year. Does anybody know for sure?

Also could somebody post the GM/L number for the keyless remote? It would make it easier (and cheaper) for me to find it online. Just trying to make sure I don't get the wrong thing.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, all the Cobalts use the PassKey system and in order for the key to turn over the ignition it must have a chip in it programmed to your car. Easiest way to verify if your key has a PassKey chip is to look for a little + with a circle around it at the base of the key.

the number on my key FOB (what the remote is called):

GM/L: 22733523

I believe you can just buy one on ebay and have the dealer program it. This should be much cheaper than getting it from the dealer.

As far as a new key. It will run about 35 bucks from the dealer. I got a spare from the dealer because for me it was 35 bucks everywhere i called. Yes the key needs to be programmed too but this you can handle on your own. I forgot the procedure but a quick search will get you what you need.

I did have a nice sales guy at the dealer ask me if I needed it programmed, he was willing to do it for me. But i kindly declined since I knew how to do it at that point.

I still need to buy a new fob for my spare key.

OK, I know what you mean about the + with a circle around it. Mine doesn't have it but it still starts the car. I think what I'll do is buy the remote and the key from ebay. The one I saw from the seller has a + sign and it comes with the keyless remote for like $20. I wonder if I could program the new one with the "fake" key I alrady have.

OK, that helps. I think I have a couple of months left of warranty. Dealer should do the remote for free. As far the key, those are cheap too if you buy them online. As I said, I hope I can program the new key with the one I have since mine is different and doesn't have that "+".

Yeah I read you start the car with your original key, turn it off, and then start the car with the new one. That should program it.

its a "tad" more complicated then that... but it's not super complex, your dealer should be able to do it too
