locking gas cap

My girlfriend is in the search of locking gas cap for her 06 Cobalt.

My gas was stolen from my car few months ago, and she does not want it happen to her plus she's going to Washington, D.C. for college and wants a locking gas cap.

She went to the Chevrolet dealer nearby today and said it is not recommended because it will cause the engine light to come up.

Anybody here have the locking gas cap for your Cobalt?

I have aftermarket locking gas cap for my 06 Focus, and no problem since ...

you shouldn't have a problem with a locking gas cap. Just make sure it seals correctly. Shouldn't be crooked

Would buying one from AutoZone be okay? I tried googling, but I don't feel confident so I came here to see what you would say. I mean who knows if manufacturers have released a better version recently?

I bought mine at Advanced Auto and haven't had any issues, except for the fact that the ring on the retention cord doesn't fit in the groove of the new cap.

Got mine from Advanced. Close to $20 bucks over a year ago. No problems. Loved it except I use to leave keys in ignition as I pay at pump. A few times I go to take off gas cap and have to get back in car grab keys touch door to lose static again several times.

That ring that is around the original gas cap does not fit on the locking gas cap like arkkornkid said.

Make sure you don't lose the keys. Keep the spare in the car and one on keyring.

walmart has one that looks like it would fit, but there was no application guide or anything. I got a non-locking one from AutoZone for around 15 bucks. They can look it up and make sure you get the right one.

Between now and when did they re-engineer the tank to do that? I mean it sounds like its possible but, do you know how?

Yeah I bet the past time was when they used to limit areas to only being able to get gas only certain days.......wow

Watch news moar? In Philadelphia area or in New Jersey nearby had an oil truck worth $7,000 in gas/oil stolen, the truck was recovered and the tank was empty.

In Virgina Beach, I filled up my tank full the night before I went out back home on Rt-13 and discovered my tank half empty after only 20-30 miles. Approximately five gallons were missing.

Ever since I have had a locking gas cap to prevent anything more to happen, and my girlfriend even paid for the gas. Waste.

Gas price on the rise just like gas theft is on the rise. But now, of course, it's nearly pointless to buy gas locking cap because the gas price is dropping for more than 25 days straight. And hey, you never know, the next time you wake up, we could be hit harder with gas rising up much worse. You just never know.

Better be safe than sorry.

Most gas tanks on todays cars cannot be siphoned because of the anti roll over valve. This valve is designed to prevent fuel from leaking out of the tank if the vehicle is overturned in an accident. It also does an excellent job of preventing a hose from being slid down the filler neck and into the fuel.

If they want my gas bad enough, I would prefer that they siphone it out rather than puncturing my gas tank and draining it out. "Where there's a will, there's a way."

OmgBalt, that's exactly what I suspected when my girlfriend told me about the engine light.

When I got my gas locking cap, my Ford dealer didn't care, I guess it's just as long as they make money? :p

pare_john, unfortunately my car is not against siphoning obviously because I only traveled 130 some miles on a whole tank when it should have traveled nearly 300 miles. I speed. So, yeah. It could do 350-400 if I follow speed limit. But the point is, I traveled 130 miles on a whole tank.

Anyhoo, we'll give the Advanced and AutoZone a try.

Those locks are easy to pick. Oops. No really...only people with lnfs and lsjs should care because we have to put the good stuff in. Just buy one from autozone and see if it throws a code (probably not)...if you get one it's going to be the "gas cap" warning on the dash.

Looks like it fit is not a worthwhile proposition. Um...check the dubious walmart computer it should be somewhere near the spark plugs.

From 2001 up it should be nearly impossible to siphon gas...though I guess getting a locking gas cap is a good thing for the instances if people put **** in your tank instead of take it out.
