Looking at Cobalts for the first time

So, I am looking to replace my Focus. I have it narrowed down to 3 different cars, one of them being an SS supercharged which is obviously why I am here (The other 2 are the V6 Accord and Mazda 6 V6, all with manual trans.)

I am curious as to how reliable these cars are for people who do not mod their cars to hundreds of horsepower more then stock. I need a car that gives me near 30mpg highway, will have no major maintenance needed for quite a few miles (near 100K, I drive ALOT of highway miles.) I really like the Cobalt's, since I had rented one for a week in Florida while I was in Daytona Beach. I have not, however, got to drive an SS (The one I had was fully loaded with leather, bigger motor, etc) So what can you guys tell a noob like myself, about owning a Cobalt? My price range is $12k, so the car I get will 99% for sure NOT be one of the badass new turbocharged SS's. This has me narrowed down to probably an '06, maybe '07. Thanks for any help you guys can be!

It's great!!! those other cars you talk about common as hell!!! I mean base cobalts are common but an SS is a nice site. The SS takes little to look nice and our cars get 30+ on the highway easy. You may not like the 05-06 interior but if you are lucky and get an 07 like me the interior is updated and nice. Pretty much same as new cobalt turbo's. First gear will be a little jumpy at first but you will learn to control it. great car and is no slouch. It will take those two other cars you speak of easy and get better fuel economy. My SS only has 10K miles on it cant really tell you anything about how long these things last but I know they will run till 200K+. Get the cobalt you will be happy you did

You can find a used SS/SC for about that price, just have to look. I haven't had any problems with mine.

If you're looking at the new V6 Accord coupe, you will not be disappointed with its gorgeous styling and get up and go... especially for a midsize. Since we're on CobaltSS.net and GM is taking a massive **** right now... the turbo car gets an honourable mention and it's also a good buy.

Well I have a gm stage 2 ss with around 240hp. I have a 5 year 100,00mile warranty and I get about 28 mpg in the city and 32-34 on the hwy. good performance, good warranty, and great gas mileage. What more do you need (unless a 4 door) which doesn't come in the supercharged model. It comes in the turbocharged motor but it is past your price range that you mentioned
.

Hattrickstu hit 12.75.. He could have even made it faster by now..

God knows what some of the built turbo balts can hit...

Im sorry turbo06, you are, by far, not one of the fastest on this site...

They changed the steering wheel and radio for 07, it's not like it was a make over. They also took away the Recaro seats for most of the 07's , only a handful have them.

Hey, thanks alot for the replies so far!! I was also wondering, have there been any major problems, or things that have shown up in the 2005 to 2006 model years? I need to probably take out a loan for 5 years on whatever car I get so I need to be sure that whatever I get will be able to make it for 5 years without major issues.

as long as you take care of it you should have no problems.... beyond taking care of it - the occurrence of problems is an across the board gamble that, IMO, is as likely on any car as any other...barring serious design flaws that are known issues. The cobalt doesnt really have any of those.

Keep in mind the basis of the engine is the ecotec which has been out and about powering a bunch of different cars for probably 10 years now with no infamous issues. You really shouldnt have anything serious until well beyond 100k IMO.

that said, YMMV haha

good luck

I've test drove all of those cars at one point and obviously I went with the SS. The mazda 6 was unimpressive to say the least. The Maxda RX-8 was alot better looking than the mazda 6 alot less expensive and slightly faster. Though the things you can do as far as aftermarket to the RX-8 are limited. The Accord is probably one of the most common yet most reliable cars there is. But I fell in love with the SS. I got my 07 SS black supercharged with only 30k miles for $12,000. which was rediculously cheap especially compared to the accord.

So it sounds like you're looking for a daily driver that just has slightly more than average "giddy-up" to negotiate traffic. It is intended to be comletely stock and reliable........

Go with the Honda.

It won't spank everything on the road, but that's not what you want anyway. It will have the get-up-and-go when you need to change lanes or something, and the quality will far surpass the Chevy, sorry to say.

I'm not biased either way really. So far I have drove a 4cyl and 6cyl Accord. Not had a chance to drive an SS or the Mazda 6 yet.

double that

none of those cars will come very close to the SS/SC's performance numbers, probably not even the economy numbers

they are likely a higher build quality though
