My Cobalt SS/SC

Hey all,

This is my first post, I'm happy to be part of the forums.

Anyways, I got my 07 Black cobalt SS/SC 2 weeks ago and am looking for a list of easy mods to do to first before I save up for the stage kits.

I have done the air-box mod already, well actually I removed the whole thing and it's an amazing improvement in the sound of the supercharger. I bought the classic red "power adder" intake filter at autozone does K&N filters have any more improment or are they the same?

My car came with the LSD and the red and black racing seats, I'm pretty positive the LSD was a good score (hopefully) on the car but what about the racing seats? I love the look of them but are they to heavy?

And what's the best way to tune the car for a quicker response all the way around?

Thanks guys,

-D

Welcome.

Stage II w/ 2.9
Header, Dp, Exhaust
Ingalls or tranny mounts
There's a real basic list to start off from; IF your not looking to make mad power.

HP tuners if your gonna get into tuning and scratch the above list.
If you search around there's a lot of good info here.

start with the basics, GM stage 2, Cat-back, CAI, also suggest the Ingalls torque dampener as our cars wheel hop very easily and it will help prevent it from breaking axels. I have a CAI, stage 2 with the stage 3 pulley, exhaust manifold, downpipe, cat-back and added water wetter to the intercooler and I ran a 13.6 in the 1/4. Just stage 2 and you'll still be in the 14's.

I never said it wasn't.

You can run 13's with a stage 2 though.

One more quick Q:
My buddy says it's better to upgrade to a bigger pulley for the supercharger is that true?

Haha no the opposite. You want to decrease the size of your pulley for more power. Be careful though the Eaton is a giant heat soak if you lower it too much. Do some reading and youll find a setup thats right for you. A 2.8" pulley with supporting mods and a tune is a pretty stable setup for some decent power.

First of all welcome to CSS.net! Congrats on your new car, you made a great choice.

Alot of people will give advice hear(some bad, and some good). I would suggest to drive your car for at least 3 months and get a feel for how the car drives. Do all your research before you buy anything. I researched the Cobalt SS/SC in 2005 and ended up buying a 2006 with the LSD package. To answer one of your questions, yes it was a smart move to buy the LSD or better known as the G85 package. tlax23 gave some good advice, the search engine here on the site can do you alot of good.

I will throw out some advice to you.

Weak Points in the Car
Axles (Stock Cobalts have broken axles at the track, wheel hop causes alot of damage)
Steering Knuckles (Autocrossers know first hand)
Clutch (depends alot on how you treat it)
Traction off the line

^ How do you fix these problems? A good driver always helps all of these problems and...
1. Drive Shop Stage II Axles
2. Exedy Clutch, flywheel, pressure plate (260whp+)
3. GM Performance Steering Knuckles
4. Drag Radials or Slicks for at the track, only if you have upgraded axles.
5. I would not waste cash on a Ingall's ETD, but motor mount and tranny mounts off the bat. Will save you cash in the long run. Once you get a certain amount of power the Ingall's will do wrong. It is a great mod for stock with minor bolt ons.

Remember, if your going to play your going to pay.
There are some real good vendors here and group buys. Take your time and look through the site. Good luck and if you have anymore questions feel free to ask. This should be some good advice for just starting out.

I consider myself a good driver and I hit a 14.0 with stage 2 and a CAI, just Stage 2 and you would have to perform a perfect launch and shift timing to tap into 13's, the average person is not going to.

Look at the gentleman who posted above you. 14.241 stock.

How are high 13's impossible with stage 2?

I never said it was impossible, read my posts and understand them before you make a comment on them. My point was that the average driver is not going to reach a 13 second pass with just the stage 2 kit. The 14.2 stock pass is most likely a "freak" car, there have only been 2 cobalts recorded to my knowledge with stock 14.2 passes. So if it makes you feel better, I will say the average driver and the average car, will not reach 13 seconds with the only modification of the GMPP stage 2 kit.

To contrast your post, a lot of people have hit 13s with just stage 2 (w/ maybe an upgraded catback)...

You sir, are incorrect. It does not take a "freak" cobalt to run a 14.2 stock. It takes a good driver.

I realize that YOU have only heard of 2 cobalts hitting 14.2 stock. That doesnt mean that only 2 cobalts have achieved that.

I said nothing of an "average driver". I simply stated that a good driver with only stage 2 can hit 13's all day long. And it's true.
