Need an answer asap!

Hey everyone i know this might be a some what dumb question but it has me a little bit baffled. What is considered the front of our motor(lsj)? To me the front of the motor is the timing side and the rear is the trans. But what is throwing me off is the fact that everyone calls the 4th piston the one that is near the timing side... Someone explain this. thank!

The #4 Piston is the one next to the trans. The #1 Piston is the one next to the timing chain.

Yes i know that.. But why do people say the when the 4th ring goes they always talk about the 1st cylinder? I always seem pics posted of the timing side.

With GM in-line engines #1 is always closest to the timing set.

On V engines its always the cylinder closest to the timing set on the head which is more forward.

Yes i understand that and always have. What i don't get is when people say they blew the "4th" piston ring it's not the 4th piston they are talking about... It's the number one piston and rings. I was asking why they call it that

Refer to post #4 again.

Its probably because they don't know anything (which is probably why it blew up in the first place)... and so when it blows, they're like "Oh, that must be #4." Because its the only one that can blow/have problems, right?

HAHA you are killing me!! See the only reason i can come up with is maybe the fuel rail? It's the end of the line so they are counting the flow of injectors? I don't know just was curious lol.

The rail still ends with #4, though. Fuel enters on the #1 side.. end of the rail is on the #4 side.

That's how I've always known it on GM engines.

Look at the 60v6 motors. (2.8, 3.1, 3.4, 3.6). The right head is more forward than the left and that's where #1 is. As oppsed to the 4.3 V6 and 4.8, 5.3, 6.0, 6.2 etc etc.

Our current 3.6 HFV6 has bank two foward on our fwd vehicles such as the traverse, acadia, enclave, etc.

I'm well aware, thanks. I've only been pulling the powertrains out of the R-bodies for 2 years or so. Also, Bank 2 is always forward on any GM V6 engine with the 60 degree head-separation. CTS/SRX/STS are the same way.
