Post Oil Change For Dummies?

All right, once I actually change my oil, I'll take some pics while doing so and post them up, with a quick little guide. But first I need some help from you all.

I have 05 Blue SS S/C with the 2L Engine.
It takes 6 Quarts of Mobile 1 Synthetic 5W-30 Oil.

I went to the store and bought a filter. Is this how the filter should look? Its really small compared to the ones on my other vehicles (camaro & S10)
Pictures of Filter:

Also, I went to buy oil... and ran into a problem.
Was looking at the several different kind of oil. According to the bottles, all mobile 1 oil is synthetic. The had Mobile 1 Synthetic Clean 5w30, Mobile 1 Synthetic 5W-30 (plain) and Mobile 1 Synthetic EP (extra protection) 5W-30.

I plan on buying the Plain Mobile 1 Synthetic 5W-30. But they only had 3 quarts... No good.

I'm going to buy the oil, and do the oil change before this weekend.
I'm at 3500 Miles, and the oil meter reads 50% left. When I manually check the oil, it is full, but beginning to get dirty.

Location of Oil Filter

yes that is what the filter looks like you will also need a 1-1/4 or 37mm socket

The first one you mentioned is a blend of synthetic and regular oil. Do not buy this.

The second one is the one that comes in your Cobalt from the factory.

The third one has extra additives that they say makes it possible for longer intervals between changes. It is Mobil 1 Extended Performance (not extra protection).

Did you move your supercharger to take that picture? The reason I ask is my supercharger doesn;t give that much room to get a hand into the area for the oil filter removal.

That is indeed the filter. I was a little scared by it when I first bought one too... I think it's a good thing not to have the wasted metal from other filters.

so what ever happened with the guide? Either you haven't changed your oil yet or your pictures got lost?

I'd like to see exactly which screw u open under the car, and what's the easiest way to get to the filter?

Thanks

Sorry about that man. This thread can be deleted. I was going to take pictures, but i got into a hurry and forgot. Yeah i changed the oil. Possibly next oil change. Its quit simple actually. The filter its kind of a pain in the ass to change. Only advice i can give you is to allow your engine to cool off, or your gonna burm yourself. damn block stays hot for hours.

Here are the steps:

1. Jack car up and put on stands.

2. Use a 15mm wrench to remove drain plug and drain oil into a drain pan. Plug is on the back of the oil pan angled down.

3. Remove two 10mm bolts that hold the coolant fill assembly in place. Swing the assembly towards the passenger side and wedge it out of the way. Be careful not to break it. It is right in front of the supercharger.

4. Use a 1 1/4" socket on a 1/2" drive socket wrench OR a 1 1/4" wrench to loosen the oil filter cap. 32mm will work too.

5. The oil filter is clipped into the cap. When you pull the cap up the filter will come with it. You may have to wiggle and fuss with it to get it out completely.

6. Pull the old filter out of the cap and snap in the new one. Reverse the procedure. DO not overtighten the filter cap. Make sure to put drain plug back in.

7. Add 6 quarts of Mobil 1 5w30 oil. Check dipstick to verify it is full.

Easy 15 minute job.

Take it to the dealer.... bs with the sales guy..... make him buy you a coke.... flirt with cute girl in showroom..maybe get her digits......go smoke cigarette.......go to cashier....pay $30 bucks and get in car that now has A) fresh oil and filter; and B) has been washedand vacuumed. You can't beat it for the price, cost's me more than $30 bucks for the crap to do it myself. Lexus goes one better though, they give you a loaner car, usually a ES330 or IS250, and they know what windex is.

And to make it even easier to get the filter out, I'd check out my local GM dealership and order the J-tool socket (if they will) that is for that purpose. You won't have to disassemble anything.

Probably a $50 tool. It takes 27 seconds to move the coolant fill cap deal. Not worth it to me.

For $30 I would be afraid that they weren't using Mobil 1.

I think he's talking about GM's menu priced oil changes which are 29.95, in Canada anyways......buuuut, thats only for regular oil and filter up to and including 5 litres. Any more oil or different oil is charged accordingly...so if they are doing mobil for that, that is might fine of them.

No kidding. That's right at the cost of the oil and filter alone.

I just changed my oil for the first time on my 2.0 L supercharged. Even though the manual and lots of people on here say it takes 6 quarts, it was not even fully on the low mark with 6 quarts and plenty of time to drain. I ended up putting in 6.5 quarts to bring it to the full mark. This was after running the engine so I know the oil filter was filled up.
Spent ~$36 in total for oil, $8 for oil filter, so still ~$25 cheaper than the $70 they charged me last time at the dealership.

It's not as hard as it seems...once you get the wrench on there, all you need to do is loosen it just a bit. Then you can screw it off by hand, which is much easier. Same with getting it back on - all you need to do is tighten it a bit at the end with the wrench. Also a torque wrench seems a bit extreme...it's only supposed to be tighened to 15 ftlb or so. A regular socket worked fine for me.
