Paint my wheels?

So my rims aren't in the best shape. Since the car has a repaired title, the side it was hit on has some scratches, all the center caps look terrible, and the chrome is starting to fade. I'm thinking about just painting them black or powdercoating them. I'm not trying to spend a lot on the appearance because I'd much rather use my money on horsepower. Anyone have any advice on painting wheels. I'd like something more permanent than plasti-dip and not as expensive as powder coat. Although I do know a guy.

Powder coating is the strongest you will get hands down. I will say this though I had a set of 17 SS/NA wheels for my winter wheels. Used them for 3 winters and I had them plasti dipped and put clear coat over too of them and never had any issues with peeking or anything.

Putting paint on them will likely peak at some point. Like he said^ powder coating is much more durable. I guess it just depends on how many times you want to paint them.

If you use plasti dip right and use a top coat it's damn durable. The top coat can be clear or another plasti dip top coat. Diyyourcar has a decent amount of info and how to's for getting started.

If you do plasti dip, do light coats until it has a nice thick layer on it. Let it dry and then put some satin or gloss clear coat over it and do 2-3 coats of clear. I did that for my evo mod and it lasted over 4 years of daily driving year round and is still on the car right. Ok with the new owner

I don't know if that is his rate or if he cut me a deal. I've known his wife since I was in kindergarten, maybe a family discount idk. I did let his race shop sponsor my softball team for a few years. Now I just have to figure out how to explain to my wife that I need to do this.....

Start with the new wheels (pick some shitty looking expensive ones) and then say well I could could get the stock ones powder coated for way way less.

She doesn't understand. She'll tell me to stop buying car parts but then wants a new Michael Kors purse every 6 months because "they go out of style". If I didn't have to take all the wheels off and drive them an hour away, or I could do it without her seeing the car up on jackstands, I would just do it anyway. She'll ask questions, and her questions don't usually end well for me. Marrige.

That's the route I'm forced to take. This Cobalt is a commuter car, I drive 56 miles each way to work, 6 days a week right now. When it's time to replace something, I want to upgrade. Stock is boring. I have only had this car for about a week and a half and my finger is in the trigger for a supercharger. I found two used ones but the guys were being weird so I backed out.

Don't worry, when you're married and you combine bank accounts, every penny must be accounted for. I have begged to be put on an allowance just so that I can spend money and not have to explain why.
