so your partents are helping out by paying insurance? isnt that pretty much what i said.. i'd consider that 'some help' from parents.

but anyways.. i just think everyone needs to relax

7.50$ x 30 hours = 225$ a week

225$ x 4 weeks = 900$ a month

Now lets say they take 150$ total a month in taxes

That still leaves you with 750$ a month to use towards the car and insurance which I believe is enough.

That is why I believe a 16 or 17 year old working part time can afford a new ss/sc if they REALLY wanted to. Yes they would be strapped for cash but it is possible. When I was 16 I could have been able to pay a 350$ a month car payment no problem. But I didnt like the idea of not having any spending money for other things.

Mike
My bad, your talking about the car payment only. I was disputing this statement

(im so sick of hearing 'i paid for it myself' when there is no way you did everything yourself without help from mom and dad. I know for a fact there are very few part time jobs at 16 and 17 that pay enough to cover a cobalt SS/SC)

Funny how that works some time.....

This is off topic, but on topic at the same time.
A pet peeve of mine, and it dosent bug me too much, but rather makes me laugh, is when people bitch about other people driving below the speed limit, when the speed limit is a maximum speed, not a minimum.

I am in my 40s and absolutey love my SS/SC. Yeah half my hair is grey already and pretty soon I'm gonna need a cane to help me walk, maybe even a walker but I can still drive.

I don't show off and pretend I'm driving a fast car because I know there are tons more cars that can kick my ass. I have had about 5 people try to get me to race in the year and 4 months I have owned it and I just let them keep on revving and slowing down and going faster and just keep driving the speed limit.

I haven't even modded the car, that's not what I bought it for either, I bought it because it had leather seats, XM, sunroof, nice rims and tires and it looks great, it just happened to have a supercharger in it that I really could care less about. No tint, no special rims added, no nothing extra, 100% stock and that's the way it's gonna stay.

Yeah I can remember when gas was $.79 a gallon, graduated in '82, was a teen when I saw the Bee Gees in concert for the Saturday Night Fever tour, got to see Black Sabbath live when Dio was the singer for the Heaven and Hell and the Mob Rules tours, remember very well the day Elvis died, and I had a ball going to 3.2 bars at 18.

Both my parents are gone now, I miss them terribly, I have their house and I have a nice job where it affords me the chance to get all the fun things I want and the SS/SC was one of them. It's no vette, but I've never been interested in them.

I wish the car was gonna be around more so even more people my age would have the chance to have one. It's a fun car, that's why people my age and older have them.

Boy do I agree with you.In my case it was a dollar a bale (110lbs. of alfalfa) hence the term bucking bales. I'm 54 like I said, and now that MY kids are grown and I'm done trying to make sure they had all the opportunities for a good life I can now afford to buy whatever I damn well please and drive it any way I deem fit. Got to Euorope and drive the autobahn and see how you like being flipped off by a pissed off German because you're only 90 in your punk ass Saab and holding up his 175 in his Porsche.
And no....I don't think I'm done yet

Yes actually,I did walk to school every day from the time I was in the third grade until I was a junior in high school at which time I'd finally saved enough for my first car. It was only uphill coming home but only geeks rode the bus. It wasn't that far, only three and a half miles. You live in Houston, what the hell would YOU know about snow.BTW love your blue Vette, hope your new one is as pretty.

You'd be the exception rather than the rule. But then again you are 20, not 16-17. you should be doing all that stuff unless you are enrolled in college full time.

God I remember when gas was $.82 per gallon too. My dad used to buy it to clean things because it was cheaper than actualy cleaning solvent. But back then I was 16 and my parents were paying for my gas in my 78' Silverado.....good times

Eih... it depends on the cop.

If you do it at night, you can pretty much count on getting pulled over for going too slow.
Drunk/Intaxicated drivers usually do this.

A lot of roads actually have Speed minimums.

I was just pointing out that a speed limit is a posted maximum.

I myself do NOT typically drive under the speed limit.

Thanks.

We had a blizzard about 2 years ago where we got like a quarter of an inch or just enough to see on the rooftops. I almost went snow tire shopping.

What the hell was the topic again. I'm 35 and don't think I'll ever not own a sports car of some sort. I'm sure there are many people older than me with that same mentality (see corvette forum lol) and if they want to drive a cobalt, mustang, vette, etc., then so be it. The best thing about being older and owning a sports car, is having extra money to mod it.

For everyone that is complaining that parents help their kids, I think it is pretty lame. I have worked since I was 16 and I am 21 now. And my parents have never just outright bought me a car or anything. They always have made me pay for it, because they believe you need to work for what you have and i totally agree. That doesn't mean they have never said "forget about paying insurance this month I know you just bought books for school" I guess what i am trying to get at is, if parents can afford to help out their children I see nothing wrong with that.

I know I am very fortunate my parents have helped me as much as they have, but I don't see why you would put up an argument that you shouldn't drive a Cobalt SS or another nice car for that matter because your parents provide you with shelter and you are younger. Of course at 16-17 very few teens can afford to pay for a car and live on their own, with things as expensive as they are now days and with minimum wage as low as it was when i was that age ($5.15) it just couldn't happen.

I earned a full tuition scholarship to a university and i still live at home. My parents are very thankful I was able to do my part to make me getting a good education (something most parents wish for their children) easier and more affordable for them.

I just had to vent.

Joe

Sorry to burst anyone's bubbles but if someone is going through a mid-life crisis, I HIGHLY doubt they will be buying a cobalt

Also, I'd rather see an older person driving a nice car then a young punk because they most likely appreciate it more and represent it better than any 17 year old wanting to be fast and furious EVER could.

So props to the pops Hell, atleast they can say the earned it

I agree 100 %. My 19 years old has gone through a 96 GP/SE,99 S10 and drove my Silverado for a while and did not take care of any of them. I can only imagine how hard he drove them. Now he has a 2500 dollar Grand Am, does not take of it either.

I think the kids, or a majority of them have had too much **** handed to them.unlike it used to be.

My pet peeve is people who think younger people cant afford things. People that see a youger person in a nice car and automatically say ZOMG mom and dad bought that for you!! I have heard that crap since I was 16 and not once have my parents dropped a dime on one of my cars or insurance. I am turning 20 this week and am on my 5th car and I take pride in the fact that I paid for everything I have to show. My last car was a 05 GTP comp G fully loaded with nav, paddle shifters, heads up display, and I got so much **** from people saying I didnt pay for it! Just becuase you couldnt afford nice cars when you were my age doesnt mean I am in the same boat. And not every teenager is a "Punk" I think of my friends and I as being very mature and anything but some "Punk kids".

End rant.

If you can then more power too you..

I had crappy vehicles untill i graduated college.. then i bought 4 and a house.. I guess i coulda spent every dime i earned on vehicles during and before college, sure, but my advice to most 16-20yo's.. save your money till you have enough to not care about how much you lose on depreciation. It sucks working for every last dime and watching it dissapear before you even make it.

Spend your time getting 'edumacated' and not working your @$$ off for a depreciating vehicle. thats just my opinion.. dont listen to it if you dont like it. All i know is that it worked for me and many of my classmates.

Knowledge => money => sweet cars (it doesnt work in the opposite direction)

Thats just my story.. take it for what its worth...

sorry.. not trying to offend.. just making a counter point.

And another note.. Regular cobalts arent marketed to 20-30's, its marketed to everyone
Im 17 and i paid for my car.. like i said in other threads ive been saving my christmas money and birthday money since i was 12 I have always loved cars..I work at a movie theatre to keep up with payments I work lots of hours for my age..and all my parents did was sign a co-loan
