Police using "blackbox" in deadly Cobalt crash
I had heard of this from my brother that is taking classes for collision repair. Your pcm takes a snapshot of the info at the moment of impact. All cars have had it since OBDII started is what he said

Pull Onstar fuse. /Onstar
It records it in a <30 second loop and when the car hits something and/or airbags deploy then the last information that's naturally available on the loop is also the information leading up to the crash.
It's right in the Owners Manual.
They call it the Event Data Recorder ("EDR"). It's on page 7-17 in my manual.
It says right there in the manual that it monitors:

and wheres this fuse?
The insurance ones like progressives plug in thing aren't the same thing as your cars black box although they probably record the same info. OEM doesn't care about what you were doing except immediately before and during the crash which is why it only records a few seconds. Insurance does since reckless behavior doesn't always cause an accident.
In the fuse box.
Being a jackass today aside, it's in the interior fusebox, so not the one under the hood. If you're a passenger sitting in the front passenger seat, this one is the one that's behind the panel to the left of where your left shin would be. It's fuse #24, according the the manual for my '09. There should be a a fuse map on the fuse cover as well though.
Well when I went to NJ to do some tuning for some people, one of the guys decided to disconnect his OnStar and we couldn't connect to it through the OBDII port through HPtuners and he had issues connecting with a reader previously. Plugged the OnStar connection into the box behind the rear deck panel and we had power going to the HPtuners again. So its proven, not a wild guess.
I do know that OnStar can't retrieve some information from the car when I have my Dashdaq plugged into the OBDII though.

they used the black box info after a kid i went to hs with killed two girls when he crashed after hitting a deer. he said he wasnt speeding and tried to brake but lost control. the black box said he was going 70+ and the brakes were never applied
he got off of the manslaughter charges. but got charged with some other stuff and i heard the parents were gonna file unlawful death in civil court.
one of the girls lived another week on life support but died when they took her off. so im sure that wasnt cheap. let me find the articles

here is a video. i was a little off with the info but its been a while. i live like 4 miles where this happened and the house they were coming from is off the road i live on.
i knew one of the girls that died's sisters, but had never met her.
personally i had never heard of the "hill hopping" and i have been on that road several times and know numerous people that live on that road.
i do remember he wasnt charged with man slaughter

So, even if you DID go 120 MPH, it shouldn't matter since they're only GM techs, not state patrol.
Legally, they shouldn't care... you're not going to give a dealer an infraction if their front lawn is outside of the city regulations because the grass is 3/4" too tall, would you? No, you're not a city official.

Good thing he didn't know that. According to the warranty booklet (at least for the extended warranty) racing voids it (or actually any damage caused by it, but they can argue their point that it did, directly or indirectly)
apparently NONE of them were buckled up. Can't blame just the driver. Chances are, if any of them had any common sense/clear thinking, someone would call it a bad idea or simply not go...
Can't blame it all on the driver.
