probably a stupid question...

hey, just got whats probably a stupid question, i'ved looked inthe how to section but didn't find an answer. all i really want to know is if the shifter shaft is threaded or not? i ordered a new shift knob, should have checked but i didn't have the bit to take off the stock shift knob, and probably should have asked around before i ordered, but i figured i'd take the chance. so yeah, just making sure its threaded and can take any shift knob.

btw, ordered this:

i know i could find a cheaper one and whatnot, but i liked it, splurged a little.

NO, the stock shifter is not threaded. Aftermarket yes, stock no. Also is the shifter knob compatible with the reverse lockout mechanism or no? If it's not you'll have to disable it.

dammit not what i wanted to hear. heh. i'll figure something out. thanks for the quick responses!

what the hell was chevy/saab thinking when they designed the shifters? its stupid not to thread the knob, as well as making it a choir to take off the stock knob.

i liked my stock knob, it was a little high, but the knob itself was good for me.

the stock knob isn't bad, i was just starting to get a little bored with it. wanted something round, so i ordered the momo knob. now i'm seriously debating about the b&m short throw shifter. doesn't look too hard to install.

a) are both b&m and hurst shafts threaded, and b) are they worth the money? i would be willing to spend it if the shifts are smoother. i personaly don't mind the stock shifter, so this wasn't a mod on my 'to do' list, but if its worth it i won't mind doing it.

ebay shifter is 50 bux and is a short throw shifter as well.. really can you warrant spending 150 or so on a shifter?

You use a ebay shifter for a 00-05 Cavalier. You have to mod it some for a SS/SC.

you need to mod it for the ss/sc? even though it natively has RLO or is that the problem?

there is no modding for the ebay shifter. just take the RLO off. it's three screws.

i guess you could consider the cutout of the stock plastic a mod, but you have to do that with most of the shifters.
i love my ebay short shifter. just know its prob going to come with a purple metal ring that you can paint

SS/SC has a different shifter than 2.2 and 2.4. Some have the purple lock out some don't.
Here is a how to make it work in a SS/SC https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...ghlight=pclear you can get rid of your lock out and use your new knob while your at it.

exactly! I have the B&M shifter, but seems as how short shifters aren't very complicated pieces of equipment, i can't see how one could be vastly superior. Short shifters in general ftw!

nah its all good. i appreciate the advice and i didn't want to come off as a dick sounding like i was saying 'yeah i dont' care what you say blah blah blah!' lol. like i said i just hope it makes enough of a difference cause i didn't mind the stock knob.

lol at kingg5.... never even thought of what i was typing. i feel like a message board noob now! lol.

yeah, so just got an email saying the shift knob that i ordered is no longer available and won't be coming in, so i was credited the amount i paid. the main reason i was going with the new shifter was to accomidate the new knob. gggrrrreeeaaaat. could have known this about... 2 days ago! lol. oh well. i'm gonna decide over the next few days what i want to do, whether i want to install the shifter or sell it. how big of a difference is the shifting between stock and hurst/aftermarket? is it worth it?
