Since these cars are really close to the Ion i'll let you know what my experience was.

As weather got colder when I was living in wisconsin I noticed a few things w/ the ignition. Sometimes I couldn't turn the key and other times I could but even when i got to the 'start' spot the engine wouldn't start up. It wasn't the characteristic "clicking" when the battery goes out or anything, but just nothing.

Turns out there was a TSB on the Ignition module of the Ion's (I have a 2004) where the grease they used to lubricate the ignition area behind the key would get very gummy and not allow the contacts to come together in colder weather. I took it in, showed them the TSB, and it was all fixed under warranty w/ no more issues.

You may want to check on the same sort of issue for your car.

I had the same problem with a malabu and it turned out to be a bad ignition.
