Reverse Sensor
Reverse Sensor
I just purchased a 2007 Cobalt SS S/C last Wednesday. So far I have enjoyed it, however I have noticed something missing. My last vehicle was a 2005 Ford F-150, it had these really annoying reverse sensors that would go off as you got near something while backing up. I hated the noise but learned to use them to back my truck into spots.
Now I have this car and it is impossible for me to judge how close I am to the cement wall that my rear is approaching. Do you guys know if anyone sells a kit for the Cobalt (searched GM and found nothing) and if not do you happen to know any after-marked kits you would recommend?
(I searched the forums for this but found nothing).

I'm gonna appologise for this first... it ain't gonna be pretty.
Okay... talk about lack of driver skill.
This thing isn't some gargantuan truck with an 8' bed out back... it's a small car.
Try going into a parking lot and getting some practice first. Every vehicle is different, but you don't need a computer to help you drive.
Maybe you should have bought a Lexus... those things can parallel park for you too.
No wonder I see so many idiot drivers on the roads... have we all become so pacified by technology that we forgot driver's ed day one teachings?

Thanks RaineMan, that was helpful
The only reason I am looking for a sensor is because I park in a garage every day at work. I was thinking rather than risk brushing the wall and ruining my paint job, it might be better to install sensors. I have been driving since 1991 and have never had sensors before (excluding my truck), so it's not like I can't do it. I was just asking if you had a suggestion for a kit, not for your opinion of my driving skill.

Wow D4u2s0t, you are as helpful as RaineMan. You two should hook up and do a stand-up routine.
If you don’t have a suggestion about a kit, please don’t post. Your snide comments only show your intelligence and do not help the point of the post.

again, i'm not being a dick here, but if you can't pull into a spot without fear of hitting a stationary brick wall, please stay off the road.
or, like already suggested, practice your parking skills. set up a cone with a big stick in it, and practice backing up. this way you can learn the distance, and if you mess up you hit a cone, not a wall.
Dust, you can see out teh back window? I have driven every vehicle in creation and this is the first time I have struggled with seeing out the rear. I use the side mirrors for everything when backing up. With the Cobalt's high ass, small window, and spoiler, its impossible to judge.
Duncan, check this out. the very first one is audible only that taps into reverse lights for power. $100 well worth saving a few scratches. http://www.reversebackingsystems.com...g-sensors.html
This looks cheaper, but still an option: http://www.backup-sensor.com/buy_now.htm
Why razz on the guy, we are all spoiled by technology, wether it be a sensor or something else.

Well you shouldn't have posted a long story about why you need them and they wouldn't have commented
But I dont think they make an aftermarket sensor. If Gm had one tho I would think it would at least be the whole rear bumper. Just call A Chevy dealer and ask the parts dept.
I stand corrected

Thank you OrngBalt, I will check those out.
Sorry that I bothered you guys with my silly question. I thought I could get helpful information here considering the nature of this website, I was apparently wrong.

Here is another one. It appears this may have some less intrsuive options (without drilling out bumper)
good luck

has nothing to do with it. one of the first things you learn when driving a car is how to park. he basically said without a sensor he's going to crash into the wall. i think i offered some good tips about the cones.
This thread makes me giggle.
To the original poster, they weren't being mean but honest. It's a small car and any smaller, you'd have a Aveo or something. How can you not judge how close your car is? Maybe it's because you haven't had the car that long and you just need to plain old get used to driving and parking the car but you shouldn't need some type of "sensor" to do it.
They weren't trying to be ******** but just being honest like myself.
That's my honest opinion. You should just keep driving it and you'll get comfortable with it.

You are right NJHK. Comments like :
he basically said without a sensor he's going to crash into the wall. i think i offered some good tips...
---of which one of the "good tips" were: maybe turn around and look over your shoulder?
try to rent a driver. for 15 $ bucks an hours, if you pay de gaz, i can beat ur rig 12 hours a day.
Dust, you can see out teh back window?
i'm not being a dick here, but if you can't pull into a spot without fear of hitting a stationary brick wall, please stay off the road.
I'd suggest getting another Ford pickup with that annoying beep.
You are 100% correct, they were not trying to be ******** but just good ole honest helpful people. I guess I must have totally misunderstood their definition of help. Without great suggestions like these I would have never thought of looking over my sholder, hiring a driver, getting my old truck back, dusting my windows, or the best of all....totally staying off of the road!! And whats more, I love how they totally answered the original question and were very helpful in making a decision about a modification to my new car. They are all great people and should be given medals for their work and tireless efforts in helping new owners and new forum members. With comments like these I can see why comments like this : Well you do realize there are a bunch of 18 year old ******** running around this site are 100% correct and spot on. You guys are the best
To your suggestion of You should just keep driving it and you'll get comfortable with it, I would say you are correct. In six months I will probably look back at this post and be like "why did I think I needed sensors?". I was just thinking that this would be a simple first modification to my car, something that would be practical, low cost (sub $150) and would not hurt resale value later on. Apparently if you suggest something like that around here you get jumped on. I did not realize that using technology to make something easier was a sign of bad driving skills. I wonder if the same people that offered these other "great" suggestions use presets on their radio? I mean why not just dial it in, all you have to do it turn a knob, that is some bad radio useage skills if you have to use presets. I use them, but I am not afraid of technology like some of these folks appear to be. If I could just hop in the car and say "drive to work", I would jump on that in a heartbeat. Until technology like that is available, however, I will enjoy driving my sporty car manually.
