RPM=power??

most random queston here...

in most true "import" cars they mostly seem to make ok power numbers with small engine size....but they always have HUGE redlines...so how does haveing that massive RPM band let them make power???

Kinda. The more fuel you can burn the more power you can make. To be miserly on fuel smaller engines are used. to make up for the lack of displacement, more rpms are made allowing more fuel to be burned in a given amount of time.

Think of it this way. Assuming the efficeincy of the engine to convert gasoline and air to hp, it would take a 2.0L N/A engine 18,000 rpm to burn the same amount of fuel/create the same hp as a 6.0L N/A engine at 6,000 rpm.

Forced induction is another method of compensation.

horse power is tork (sp) multiplied by engine RMP. V8 has more tork bottom end and so it dose not need to rev so high to make big horse power. Small displacement engine that was designed to make little tork will need to rev really high to make higher hours power.

This is just simply put and there is a lot more that can be said about this.

Actually horsepower = (torque * RPM)/5,252

Low end torque, wish I had more. I think it's more fun. Me I'm at 4000 rpm when the fun starts.
