Sedan vs. Coupe

ok, seems that i hear/see is bashing on sedans. and not just on here. the other day i was told by my friends g/f that her 06 stock 2.2 auto would stomp mine in a race. her reason being...Look at the grandma 4 door. WTF ok so heres what i wanna know. what are the differences between the two. i know its only a bit of weight from the extra doors. but ive looked at the specs and all else is identical. does the coupe handle better faster what? so lets here it pros and cons of each. on a side note i would have rather boughten a 5dps coupe but my dad said heres 1000 for a Down payment, and here is the car that it will go toawrds....LAME.

I don't specifically know in regard to the Cobalt's, but in GENERAL, coupes A) weigh less, and B) have less body flex (although not as bad as hatches... they are, in general, the worst by far!)

tell your friends gf that she doesn't know what she's talking about, end of story. same engine. a little extra weight, other than that zero difference.

in some ways, a sedan is the better choice. from a side impact standpoint, sedans usually do better.

well it seems that the only difference is the extra weight but its only like what..? 50-100 lb max right? well thats easy to take care of. spare tire and jack was at least 25lbs. or more. plus base model = no options no power mirrors windows locks. so really i dont see a difference besides my friends get to get in through their own doors

I gotta say that my rental sedan SS felt fine, I drive a coupe ss. Same everything with minor noticable differences. The automatic was nice for a change too, just stomp and go!

same but a coupe auto would be almost perfectly same weight wise, maybe even heavier since the trans is like 150 or so more than a manual.

I did race a guy in baltimore down a short stretch. He had a black coupe 2.2 auto and I have a black sedan 2.2 auto. He pulled next to me and laughed (im a skinny white boy). So the light turns green and he punches, so i punch back. I ended up pulling about a car length on him by the next light. He put down his window and said nice car, the light turned green and he drove normal.

There was also another incident when a kid from my neighborhood (has a silver 2.2 coupe auto) pulled next to me and asked if I wanted to green and go, I said sure to see if maybe my incident in baltimore was a fluke. The light turns green and we both punch, this time i hit first so I had an initial pull, but ended pulling on him by a car and a half.

Im not trying to say sedans of faster but I figured Id throw past events in. Maybe its the driver...but like everyones said I dont think theres a major difference, Its just they way you drive it.

oh man. i love comments like that. u know what, i have a sedan 2.2, n i love it. i love when people talk ****. most of them being little 16 yr old fast n furious fanbois with a honda dx hatch. n they sit on so much potential but they deem it necessary to throw on an unpainted body kit. i love it. they talk so much **** n know nothing. tell ur friends gf to stfu. shes stupid. my car keeps up with 6 cyl tiburons (just not in a high speed race), mustangs, monte carlo's, i beat scion tc's, eclipse's, other cobalts. the only cobalt that is a 2.2 that keeps up with me is my buddies 07. his 07 is really quick n its auto. also i have a 5spd. normally when i lose i either get a bad start, or i mis shift. i get excited easily. lol.

but tell ur buddies gf to go and watch the fast n furious some more n throw 20 decals on her car for weight reduction and 45whp.

For some vehicles that have multiple body styles, the coupes are actually heavier than the sedans (this is the case with the Pontiac G6 I believe). Weight difference is usually negligble, though. With a midsize vehicle like the G6 and its long wheelbase, the sedan obviously looks good, and is much more proportionate than the Delta sedans. In my opinion the ION sedan looks better than the G5/Cobalt sedans, but the quad coupe doesn't look as good as the other coupes. Some people think the coupes will do better in races because they're more streamlined/aerodynamic, but this makes so little of a difference over a quarter mile that it might as well be discounted, especially with Cobalts which aren't particularly aerodynamic coupes to begin with.

As for me, I'd never buy a sedan... just not a fan of four doors styling wise. I'm sure I'll need one down the road when it's family time, but hopefully that's 10 years away.
My $0.02.

It's a driver's race. My wife has the SS sedan and has kept it stock. She has run as quick as a 17.0 in the 1/4 at Bandimere in Colorado. That was bested by a L61 with minor bolt-ons such as CAI by only 1/10th in the 1/4 on the same day. I'm sure weight had a lot to do with it.

coupes weigh maybe 50lbs more, but sedans are easier to get out of in tight parking spaces

If you look on cars.com its

SS/NA Sedan: Curb weight 3,216 lbs.

SS/NA Coupe: Curb weight 2,991 lbs.

Mine SS/NA coupe w/auto: Curb weight 2,880 lbs.

I mean just check your Door jam.

The cars.com sedan weight is wrong... has been for years.

Also, the door jam doesn't give you the curb weight, it only lists the GVWR. Thats the total weight the car can carry including the car itself.
