Seeking knowledge in lsj purchase

I haven't been here in awhile since I sold my last lsj, back then I wasn't very knowledged and spent a lot of money I'm trying not to end up like this again. Long story short I've been looking for an lsj for a DD for awhile. I found one I like and am selling my colorado for it, but there's a trick. He blew the tranny just recently resulting in a large price drop $3,500 dollars for the car I'll have 2,000 for repairs. Can get a used trams with 52,000 miles to the shop for 900 and installed with all fluids for 500. Here's the CL ad 2005 Cobalt SS/SC
Stage 3 zzp exhuast headlights wheels, seems to look good on paper but will this be reliable to DD? Thanks for your help in advance and any questions about the car I can answer.
Tim

Should be fine if the engine hasn't been abused. Use common sense, look/listen for anything out of the ordinary when you see the car. That's not a bad deal at all with the trans, will end up saving you some cash in the long run.

Well I think I'm going to close on the deal Saturday he id hauling the car up I'll take some final inspections and run my scan tool on it to check it out. If the motor runs well I hope to drive it around by next weekend.

My first question would be why'd the trans blow?

That's not exactly typical. A clutch slipping I could see.

He hopped it up and beat it hard enough to blow the tranny. Sounds like a deal too me.

If he beat on it hard enough to blow the tranny... how good of a shape can the engine be in?

Usually perfect, what's abusive on the trans is hard shifting, that has nothing to do with the engine. Only real way to hurt the engine would be excessive revs. High-rpm clutch pops will only damage the drivetrain, not the engine. I'd be fine with it if I knew I was putting a good trans back in the car. Unless the engine is rattling or has some other issue, it's probably fine.

I would want to know how many owners the car has had not that it would change your mind if you really want it but I'm just saying because if 4 different ppl owned if then for different ppl beat the **** out of it and ask how often he took it to the track if he did. But sounds like a sweet deal with nice mods

My 06 lsj has 136k, still clean as **** with no major problems. Preventative maintenance and knowing its limits is key.

Previous owner of my car blew 1 transmission and 3 clutches in 6000 miles, 3rd let go on the ride home, 1/4 mile from my house. Stupidity is a real problem these days. 108k miles later, same clutch, same tranny.

Sounds like a 10 year old practiced driving a manual with it, and never could figure it out.
