Yesterday was a bad day for the cobalt....was driving normal on the highway and then all of a sudden my car started to hydroplane...spun twice....and hit this stupid ass sign on the side of the road...missed the wall by a inch...these are the results

You wouldnt have happened to be racing that WRX behind you, were you? Dont you require water to hydroplane?
Anyway you slice it, sorry to see bro, glad your fine tho!

Damnit that really sucks.
how were you in that situation? were you racing? are you one of the believers that think using the max pressure rating on the tires is the bestest? doesn't look like much water is on the road if any

The road looks damp to me, and that's all you need. Oil and residue build up on the road surfaces making things really slick when it first begins to rain, often refered to as "Florida ice" around here.

You dont have to be racing to hydroplane. If you hit a patch of pavement that is especially wet, or a puddle on the highway, you can hydroplane.
You got lucky man. The same thing happened to me (in worse weather going roughly 40mph), and my car was nearly totalled because I spun twice, crossed 3 lanes, and ended up riding the concrete guardrail backwards for nearly 20 feet. I drive like an old person in bad weather now, and cringe when I see people barreling down the highway during rainstorms.
Just be glad your're safe, and only need a fender and a few front suspension parts.

It only takes one bad experience to make you drive smart in the rain. Mine was in my 96' Concorde and the back end, yes back end got loose in a curve that was not sharp at all during some heavy rain. Luckily with a quick flick of the wheel and a foot off the gas it quickly hooked back up.
But getting the back end loose in a FWD scared me enough to realize that trying to get out of a storm quicker or just thinking the rain did not have to slow me down was quite idiotic to say the least.
BTW from the looks of the pics there is plenty of water on the road and i could def see hydroplaning on the highway. Especially in these cars.

It doesn't take much man. I was out driving my new Silverado across Ft Polk and it started to rain lightly. I was only going about 20mph and the back end came unstuck. Fishtailed back and forth two or three times, then hit a deeper puddle and spun a 180 before stopping.
Given the fact that I was going so slow and no one else was around I didn't hit anything. But since the road was about 1.5 lanes wide, I got really lucky not to hit the concreate barriers on ether side. And if anyone has been to Ft Polk, this was on the little back road to the Hospital.

silverSS says the WRX in the picture came to pick him up, meaning, after the accident. How long after the accident before the picture was taken? Could it have stopped raining and partially dried? Is there standing water on the roadway that doesn't show in the pictures? This is a tropical climate, I've seen it rain on one side of the road but not on another and weather conditions change very quickly in the summertime.
What I don't understand is why many have to make judgements and point fingers about an incident they know little about. He said he hydroplaned, good enough for me, does the definiton of the word "hydroplane" really matter? He's just posting pictures of the result...

i was just wondering how fast he was going. i've hydroplaned and wrecked in my cobalt before too. i hit a patch of water while turning and lost control and over compensated and did a 200 degree turn and slid backwards against a concrete wall...bent the rear torsion beam

Im the buddy with the WRX, and no we weren't street racing. We had been there an hour before those pics were taken so the roads cleared up a bit. The actual puddle that he hit was a goo 100ft from where he ended up.
